First of all, I chosen to write this on Ripoffreport.com only because Hannaford does not list corporate contact information, such as the email or phone numbers of district managers, the CEO, etc. this am be the only way to inform the upper management of just how unhappy we are as a result of the Brattleboro branch's treatment.

Twice, when carded as we paid for our purchases which included beer, Hannaford refused to accept my wife's U.S. Permanent Resident card as valid proof of identification. During today's incident, the cashier not only rejected my wife's card, but then asked her to show her passport, as if she is some sort of visitor. A few minutes passed with us explaining to her about the type of card that she was looking at, even calling it a "green card" just in case she was only aware of the derogatory nickname off the card. She eventually called the store manager, who also asked for a passport and spent the next few minutes examining the "green card", until she noticed on the front in bold lettering the words "Department of Homeland Security" and authorized us to buy our pack of beer.

Interesting that it was OK for me to buy the alcohol with my driver's license, which I could have used to drive my car home after pounding the entire 12 pack once leaving the store... while my wife, with her valid government ID that allows her to leave and enter the United States as she wishes (p.s. you can't do that with a driver's liense), was potentially refused even though she is obviously NOT driving.

In our minds, the only reasons possible for this to continue happening are as follows. A. Hannaford illegally discriminates. B. Hannaford hires managers and cashiers who are ignorant of such issues and does not train their employees to identify and understand proper forms of identification.

I also understand the this might only be an issue at my local Hannaford in Brattleboro, VT... and that it may not be an issue at other stores. Feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think it was discrimination.

You seem awfully quick to jump on the discrimination bandwagon.  Unless you can prove that they do this to all resident aliens, it's not discrimination.  Your second scenario is more likely.  I deal with supermarket cashiers on a daily basis, most have never seen a permanent resident alien card.  As for the manager, with the plethora of forged cards in circulation, I can understand his reluctance to accept it.  I'm not saying her's is forged, just that there are thousands of forged ones out there.  Since she is a permanent resident alien, why doesn't she get a Vermont driver's license?  It might eliminate the hassle in the future.

As an aside, "green card" is not a derogatory nickname for the permanent resident alien card.  They were called that because they were originally printed on green paper.
