I currently own 2 Harley's. A 2003 100th anniversary Dyna Low Rider and a 2006 XL883R Sportster. The Dyna was purchased new at Suffolk Harley in Bellmore N.Y. and the Sportster was a private purchase. Owner won it in a trade show and it was new, never registered and had 13 miles on the odometer. My poor experience's started with the dealer in Bellmore. My handlebar risers on the DYNA were corroded at delivery. I was promised this would be resolved at 1st service. After a year and several service management changes, I basically had to fight hard to get what I was entitled too. 2nd, My speedo drops out after a short stop. It reads 66 pct. of actual speed and comes back to normal at will. The dealer never corrected this. 3rd, I invested over $5,000 in performance engine parts including SCREAMIN' EAGLE cylinder heads and a 95" BIG BORE KIT. I did all the work myself as I am a certified auto tech. The valve stem seals in the heads are faulty. Harley has a service bulletin and updated seals for this. My bike uses a quart of synthetic oil every 1,000 miles. Harley will tell you this is normal. It is not. I will fix this in the winter. My SPORTSTER had a brake master cylinder failure that exactly mimics a recall (no. 10125) issued by Harley. The recall covers the 2 previous model years, but not my '06. The piston binds in the bore leaving the lever to not fully return and allowing the brake lamp to stay illuminated at all times. After seeking help at 2 local dealers (before I found the recall) I bled the system. No help. I rebuilt the master after discovering the recall and it now works perfectly. Calling Harley Davidson for some assistance on both issues, and I called multiple times, I was told since Sportster is not in recall due to model year and work was not performed at a dealer (dealers employ the worst mechanics on the planet) and bike has no warranty history? (who are they kidding, how does this matter) also bike is over warranty, they would offer no assistance. I was asking for $59.00. The $36.00 rebuild kit and $22.00 for fluid. You would think I wanted a fortune from them. On the DYNA they will not even provide the seal kit and required gaskets for me to teardown my engine and perform the repair. They stand on ridiculous corporate policies to avoid stepping up to the plate for their defective designs. I have over $36,000 invested in these 2 bikes and they could not even cough up a lousy Hundred Dollar gift certificate or something to satisfy me. I told them I was in the market for a cruiser and would not consider Harley again without help. They will not help you. They do not care. I was ripped off. This is not about the cost of repairs, this is principle. I will tell all other biker's I meet about their lousy attitude. I hope Willie G. Davis reads this. Please know that I love my bike's, but if you buy 1, know what you are getting into and that harley will not be their for you. I am planning to sue them after my winter repairs are completed.  Carl N. Hauppauge, New York.

Bluto; I find the comments you wrote completely out of line. You say I was ripped off. I spent a lot of money doing hi performance upgrades to my engine. If you understood that, than you would not say I was ripped off, as you ASSUMED that $36 large was just purchase pricing! I also find that your statement about being way out of warranty was ridiculous. You appear to have difficulty comprehending. The SPORTSTER had it's failure at 4,000 miles and 1and a half yrs. old. Out of warranty by 6 months, but WAY OUT? the DYNA had only 14,000 miles on SCREAMIN' EAGLE cyl. heads. also out of warranty, but there never was a warranty because I did the work. I do not understand why you would want to pick a fight with me. Didn't your mother ( did she really name you that? ) ever tell you about "if you don't have anything nice to say..." Try a reading comprehension course before you splay your acid tongue at people. Maybe a name change would help. How about OBNOXIOUS.

Good luck on your lawsuit and post your contact info so I can have you do warranty work on my vehicles when they are many years out of warranty as your bikes are.  Also, I would like to offer to be your next salesman, because if you paid $36,000 for these 2 bikes, I'll sell you your next one and take the next 6 months off, lol. A Dyna and Sporty are 13,000 and 7999.  If you knew what you are talking about, the bikes would have been fixed and you would be out in the wind instead of looking stupid on here.

Mecanical defects!!

AUTHOR: Bill - (USA)

POSTED: Tuesday, April 17, 2012

I can totally identify with your problems! My brother bought a bran new 2012 Ultra Classic at Brandt's Harley Davidson in Wabash Indiana. Its making a clanging noise in the transmission after putting 45 miles on it. 1) When he had just got it home, after hearing the clanging, he checked the trani oil and none was showing on the stick! It was prepped at the dealer and said to be ready to ride. 2) took it back to them, they filled it, and it didn't stop the clanging! The dealer is not wanting to fix the problem even after their mechanic confirmed that its indeed not normal! Now he is dealing with a harley rep which has been an up in the air proccess with no confirmation that they will fix the problem. My brother read a report, or bulletin saying the motors from 2007 to current date have this problem and to tell the buyers that its normal and not a problem, stating that the quality of the gears have wide tolerances and can be too loose or too tight when assembled! If too loose. you get the clanging!! Normal? WTH!! You know loose gears are going to greatly increase wear and most likely fail way before their time!!  Like i want to hear clanging on a $27000 new bike all the time and know they are trying every tactic to get out of fixing the problem. I suspect they are getting the gears made cheap in some other country and the quality and precision is out the window!! All different sizes of gears received by the crate full and the tolerances are all over the place!! Thats pretty much what the bulletin states! I dont know if they have to shim the gears with spacer bushings or not, but this is just crap!! This is an ongoing process and will update all who reads later as to progress and resolution!! Bad trani gears from 2007 - current! This is crazy! Would have thought better of HD! Would also think the rep would tell him they will fix the problem  even if they have to set a new motor on it!! Well, wouldn't that be the quality warranty service you would expect on a brand new bike from HD?

My bike uses a quart of synthetic oil every 1,000 miles. Harley will tell you this is normal. It is not.

I guess Harley's haven't changed much in 30 years-had a 1975 Sportster 900.  Purchased it new from an HD dealer and sold it less than 7 months later.  I've been riding BMWs and Yamahas ever since.

This reminds me of a joke:

Harley's don't leak oil-they mark their spot!
