Hartford Insurance AARP/Hartford Insurance canceled auto insurance without giving notice and we were uninsured for a month without our knowledge Hartford, Connecticut

I had auto insurance with Hartford through AARP for three years without a problem. In October of 2010 we moved and notified Hartford of our address. Our policy with them was both home and auto in order for us to get a discount. We had never filed a claim with them. In Jan. I asked my husband if he had seen the statement from Hartford Insurance on our Auto Insurance. He said he had not seen it come through the mail. The middle of Jan. we received a notice of cancellation on our Auto Insurance for non payment of premium. I contacted them and they said we had not made a payment for two months and we were cancelled and could not be reinstated.

I told them we never got our statement and asked what address they sent it to. They informed me they had sent it to our old address and had never updated our address since our move. I had to get insurance quickly through another company at a much higher rate because our insurance had to be reinstated.

A couple of weeks later we got a notice from Hartford informing us our Home Owners Insurance was going up $300 because we were no longer getting the discount for having auto and home. I called the company and inquired about the increase and asked what mailing address they had for us. The Home insurance also had our old address and had never updated their files.

As a result, we lost our auto coverage and our home insurance went up because they did not have the correct mailing address. We contacted the company that we got auto insurance with and also took out our home owners through them. We had paid a whole year in advance on our home owners as we had just purchased the home in Oct. and we paid up front for a year in our closing documents.

I feel that Hartford was wrong in cancelling our auto without first notifying us. They had our phone # and could tried to contact us in some other way. Their records cost us a lot of stress and mistrust of all insurance companies. We are totally at their mercy and there should be a way to voice our opinion and frustrations with them.
