I received a letter in the mail saying I owed a ridiculous amount in unpaid doctor bill from over 3 years ago and the letter was very scary to me because I haven't been billed for this since I went to the emergency room and my insurance paid for it and I still had to pay a copay of about $100+ I called to try to see why I was being billed for something from years ago and something I knew was already taken care of and paid for by myself and my insurance. Everyone I talked to had a very thick middle eastern accent and I was really worried. They pressured me and wouldn't let me talk and tell them I had already paid for this years ago. They really scared me with threats about not paying the bill would have on my credit and that the IRS would be involved and I had to pay it now over the phone and everything is being recorded. I freaked out really bad but I told them I don't have money to pay this $2,000+ bill I'm a full time student with no job and no income on my own but they offered me a "deal" to pay about $985 right now and they would settle the bill and clear it from my credit and I'd be free of it. I reluctantly paid because I was worried if I didn't what would happen. But I had to put it on my credit card I have for college. I feel so cheated and vulnerable now that they took money I should be using for school and books to pay something I'm not sure is 100% true. I checked my credit report and that bill never showed up on it and I never received any mail/letter of confirmation about paying off my 3 year old doctors bill and I'm hearing and reading lots of stories about scams and collection service that take people's money the same way they did to me. I really just want peace of mind again. I want to know if I fell for the scam and if I can get my money back. I'm still trying to pay off my credit card bill which is hard with no job. I'm now stuck with another bill.

You fell for a scam

AUTHOR: FloridaNative - (USA)

POSTED: Monday, July 31, 2017

It is an expensive lesson for you. It was a scam. No way to get your funds back unless you can track down the scammers and convince them to refund you....which is very unlikely.

There are lots of tips that it was a scam. One of the biggest things that indicated you were being scammed is that you had to "pay today" and that if you didn't pay the IRS would get involved.  That is ridiculous.  The IRS isn't a collection agency for medical debt. The IRS only cares about money you owe to the IRS.

Go to FTC.gov and read up on known scams so you don't fall for any more of these popular long running scams. You will be a target now of many scammers because you end up on a list of people that fell for the scam. The scammers sell these lists of people like you to other scammers so they can get money from you too. You will need to be on your guard for similar phone calls about different debts.  Learn to say no to strangers on the phone especially bogus "debt collectors".
