September, 2003
My journey began in Melbourne, FL where my parents bought me a couch to be delivered to my home in Tallahassee. When went down to the store to take a look at it (in Tallahassee), I decided I wanted something else. I shopped around the store, was bombarded by salesmen and eventually decided on a new couch. As soon as the salesman knew that I had already purchased the couch elsewhere and I wasn't going through the hassle of returning the couch down south and then recharging it to the Tallahassee store, I no longer had any assistance in changing my order since the commission was not going to him.

Now to the real issue. I found a Queen Sleeper Sofa that we loved. NOt only was the comfort and look perfect, but the price was right. The tag clearly stated, "Queen sleeper sofa, $699!" Sounds too good to be true, right? Well it was. Once I found this couch, I contacted the origianl store in Melbourne to let them know what I wanted (since the salesman here would no longer help me) and they told me that in fact, the sleeper sofa actually cost $1099! The $699 price was for the sofa without the pullout bed. I called Tallahassee to verify the price I saw and they told me that they understood how I could "misinterpret" the tag. So I had them read me back the tag exactly word for word. I asked, how would you misinterpret the tag when it clearly says, "Queen sleeper sofa, $699"

Nothing else was stated on the tag, nothing else was on the back, that was it. I have worked in retail for most of my life and have never treated a customer like this or have ever been treated like this myself. I understand how a tag could be inadvertantly put on a wrong item or a sale tag not taken off, but this was not the case. I, the customer was 100% wrong!

To make a long story a bit shorter, they refused to give me the advertised price or any discount, told me that I was wrong and brushed me off. I called the local office first and the manager said that they would take the salesmans side before mine and there was nothing they could do. Next I called the corporate office to just let them know what was going on, the man, Peter was extremely nice and said that they have had this problem before, a lot, but they wouldn't/couldn't do anything about it. I was supposed to get a return call, but that call never came. Please be careful of this type of advertisement, it is very decieving and just plain FALSE ADVERTISING and even more a bait and switch. If this happens to anyone else, please keep calling so this type of behavior stops! I did end up buying the couch, because we fell in love with it, but now that I will no longer do business with them, I can't get the matching love seat that goes with it!

MISTAKES DO HAPPEN

AUTHOR: JACK - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, May 17, 2004

I am an employee of Havertys and unfortunately you came across one tag on the showroom floor that avg 45k sq feet and literally thousands of items tagged. These tags are created by people at our corporate office when new product come in. Its obvious when this item came in, the description was typed in wrong. There is only one person thats perfect in this world and that is the good lord above.

From reading your situation you mentioned that this item was advertised. Did you bring in the ad or the newspaper to show that?

Don't think because one tagged was created incorrectly that all the other tags are the same. Havertys has been in business for over 119 years. With the practice you are describing there is no way we would be in business that long.

Remember, mistakes do happen, that doesn't mean we have to pay for them.
