We had an appointment with "Preston" to come out and price painting on our home.  I asked for exterior painting on the backside and both sides of the house where there is hardy board that is rotting and paint peeling.  I also asked that the interior of our downstairs be painted.  He came out gave a bid and I explained to him that I am not in good health so this was something I needed done so that it would not have to be bothered with if something happened to me.  I had several bids for the work, and his was not the least expensive but he seemed to be a genuine guy and explained what he would do step by step.

He came back out after I let him know that we had chosen him for the job.  He drew up a proposal (not realizing until after he had left that it was not an actual "Contract" with his name and company name or anything on it) and wrote out everything that was to be done.  Once he finished the write up, he then asked if there was anything else we needed done to get the bid up to an even figure.  We did explain that we needed some other things done and those things got the bid up to the figure he was asking for.  We paid him $300 as promissory that he would return to do the work.

This was where the frustration began.  He came out and began the work that he promised, but he was not happy about being there and it really showed.  He tired out after performing some of the outside work (not painting yet at this point) and explained that he would be back in two days to finish and then to begin the interior painting.  He then asked for $300 more dollars to buy the paint and etc. needed for the job.

He never showed up on the day that we were supposed to see him.  He didn't even call.  He called the following day after he had promised he would be at the house, but it was an hour after he was scheduled to be there.  He had a story about how he had run over his cell phone and he was calling from a payphone somewhere in another town where he was trying to finish up a job that had been held up by rain.  He then told us he would be at our house to begin the work on the following Monday at 10:30am.

Today is Tuesday and we still have not heard from him and have been stupid enough to give him money and trusted that he would return to do the work.  He is going to be the one in the hot seat, though.  Not us because he messed with the wrong people this time.

My advice to anyone in the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex that meets "Preston," - run.  Run far and fast.  He will make you believe that he is this nice, honest person, when in fact he is nothing but a conn artist.
