Healthworkds Total Fitness (Under new ownership) Scams you when you want to cancel your contract at the end of the membership. Novato, California

My husband became disabled 6 months into his contract with Healthworks Fitness, located in Novato, unable to utilize the gym's facilities.  He was told that he was contractually obligated to finish out the terms of his contract regardless (12 months). We also moved 17 miles away from the gym and was still told he was obligated to pay for the membership until the end of the 12 month period which is now, July 2012.  My husband went to the gym in person today Monday, July 2, 2012 to cancel the contract and was told by some guy there that in order to cancel, the owner would have to speak with him. My husband asked for paperwork to sign and was again told 'You'll need to speak to the owner who will be in later today'. Well, we waited for a call from the owner and nothing. We then called at 5:45p to see if the owner was there and was told  that he was gone for the day.  We felt like we were getting the run-around at this point.  To add to the scam we were feeling we were sucked into, once the woman on the phone realized we wanted to cancel our contract, became extremely rude.  She also told my husband he would need to speak with the owner. We explained we didn't feel the need to speak to him and really just wanted to cancel our contract with them. We've paid for the 12 months and were ready to cancel.  She explained that all we needed to do was to fill out the paperwork at their location to cancel. Completely contradictory of what someone else working the counter said just 5 hours ago.  The customer service there is horrible and we have no doubt that the owner will ever call us. So we'll travel 17 miles back there tomorrow to cancel our contracts and see what happens. Good luck to anyone trying to cancel under this new ownership.
