On 3 October I was contacted by the said moving company High Strength Movers to move my personal things to Charlotte, NC from Philadelphia, PA. A booking agent with said company gave me a quote of $800 for 250ft (which she said would be the footage of the inventory of my things). The agent gave me a date of 10 October to pick up my things to have them definitely by 16 October.
The movers came on Thursday 10 October…late. I packed my own things and had exactly 4 additional small boxes to the inventory. The movers packed the truck such that I had double the footage quoted, thus the price of my move was more than doubled. When I yelled fraud to the owner Gary Manning, he took $100 off the price. I felt trapped and I went with the company anyway.
On the 15th I called the agent with High Strength Movers to see what time my things would be delivered. The agent did not know and said she would call me back. She never called me back. On the 16th I called the company again. Another agent answered the phone and after some research she told me that she was told my things would not be delivered till the weekend, but she said more than likely the next week. I asked her to have the owner/driver to call me because this was not acceptable. The owner Gary Manning, called me late that evening and he was unapologetic for not having my things on the date I guaranteed with an agent in his business. I explained to Mr. Manning that I have to buy a lot of the essential and personal things he has on his truck to live on until he delivers me my things. He then said, he would look into getting me my things ASAP (but nothing definite). The next day I called and was not able to reach Mr. Manning to get a date of delivery, I didn’t get any answers from anybody in the office. Mr. Manning would not return my calls and I could not leave a message on the phone because the voicemail box was full. 20 October, I reported my things stolen.
Monday 21 October, Mr. Manning called me and again he was unapologetic about not having my things delivered. He wanted to explain to me that all the moving companies operate in the manner that he does. He told me that my things would be delivered in a couple days (still no definite date). A couple of days, I was expecting delivery on the Wednesday the 23rd, Thursday the 24th the latest, didn’t hear from Mr. Manning until the Friday 25 October. He said he would deliver my things Saturday in the hours between 12-7. Late evening Saturday, I call Mr. Manning he tells me he is still in Maryland and he will not make it to Charlotte that day and he will be there noon on Sunday. Sunday he called and said he is delayed and will not be there till late Sunday. Late Sunday he calls and says he will deliver my things Monday.
Finally my things arrive on Monday and Mr. Manning was very unfair in his negotiations of my final payment. Mr. Manning did not feel as if it was bad business to have had my things as long as he did. I tried to explain to him that every day that he had my things cost me, it didn’t cost him anything to have my things and he wanted me to only pay $100 less than the full payment.
This was a very bad business transaction. I would advise anyone to not use High Strength Movers for their moving needs.
