I've subscribed to Puzzle Buzz (a Highlights for Children magazine) for a little over 2 years as a gift to my grandchildren. The magazine is sent to their home; the billing statement is sent separately to my address. I occasionally receive promotional packets that contain stickers and posters, which I pass along to them when I visit. Recently, there was a mini bingo scratch-off card that indicated 3 matching pictures in a row would, and I quote, "brings you FREE Book, FREE Tote and FREE Book Keeper worth $31.85." When my granddaughter scratched off the covered squares, we discovered that she had 3 matching images in a row.
There were instructions included on the card that explained you were to "send in the winning mini bingo card with the Free Gift Package Claim Form to receive your free gift package." The claim form was missing so I called to see what steps I would need to take to receive the free gift package for my granddaughters. It was during this conversation that I learned that I would be basically adding an additional subscription at an additional cost should I return the winning bingo card. It was explained that I would be charged for the books unless they were returned within a specified period of time. My daughter and her husband are busy with raising their children and I did not want to add the responsibility of having to return unwanted items in order to receive "free" merchandise.
Based on my readings of previous consumer complaints I've learned that Highlights is no stranger to this bait and switch ploy. Because of this deception, I requested that my subscription be canceled. Hopefully, Highlights will be able to abandon these questionable practices and operate in an open and transparent way. I wonder how many folks have been duped into increasing their subscription fees by these "free" offers. I also wonder how many of the mini bingo cards were "winners."

The promotional material you received should have included a letter with claim form that would have provided the offer details. The introductory shipment does include the free gifts and two Puzzle Buzz books - one of which is free, and the second book is included for you to preview risk-free. If you decide to keep the second book you can simply pay the low introductory price plus shipping and handling. Or, you can return the preview book, and there's no further obligation. If you decide not to discontinue the service, a new shipment of two Puzzle Buzz books is sent about every three weeks for your child to enjoy. There is no set number of books to purchase, no obligation, and our products are 100% satisfaction guaranteed, allowing you to cancel at any time.
