Note: This company always seemed decent until this happened.

HOA-Express, a site that provides condominiums with websites, renewed our subscription without us being aware this would occur. This money was not taken from the condo funds, it was taken from our personal account. The $300 renewal required authorization from our condo board (of which we are not members).

We requested a refund and it was refused. Not even a partial refund was offered as they claimed the $300 was needed to cover the cost of renewal. However we own a similar type of website (that serves a completely different industry) that uses auto renewal. The cost to the company is basically zero for a subscription to renew (other than a few percent transaction fee), but apparently they think we are idiots who don't know any better.

The fact that they came up with this totally false and ridiculous explanation alerted us that we were actually dealing with a gotcha rip-off company.

There are other companies that provide this type of service - you may want to skip this one.

We received this in an email from HOA Express in January 2017:

I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. So that no further charges are made, we've ensured that the subscription is canceled from PayPal's end.

We emailed them again a few days ago just because of my skepticism about this company. Here is what I received back:

Because you are subscribed to a third-party, such as PayPal, we have no control or access to disconnecting or eliminating your subscription within the PayPal system. As of now, your next payment is scheduled to occur on or before January 15, 2018, as shown below.

You be the judge. Are they confused or dishonest?

Unbelievable...

Clarification

It's certainly unfortunate this situation arose, but we did everything necessary to avoid it from occurring in the first place. The type of payment Mr. Ham made was non-refundable, according to the refund policy Mr. Ham agreed to. We notified him a full two weeks in advance of the charge, making it clear when the payment was scheduled. He voluntarily elected to allow the payment to be processed. Mr. Ham later forwarded us this notification, confirming he received and read it.

It’s also important to note that PayPal, a very buyer-friendly company, was asked to arbitrate this case. Upon doing so, PayPal decided in our favor, concluding the charge was authorized and a refund was not due.

As a small business, certain payments are non-refundable to minimize the risk we bear. A multitude of costs are associated with select non-refundable payments, including domain renewal charges, DNS service fees, email account provisioning costs, storage space allocation, bandwidth allocation, and more. Minimizing this risk allows us to provide our service at the most affordable price for all of our customers.
