PONCHA SPRINGS MAN ARRESTED IN DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CASE
by Ali Helgoth
Mail Staff Writer
A 44 year old Poncha Springs man was arrested Thursday on charges of first-degree kidnapping, second degree assault and domestic violence.
Stephen Owen Shurbet appeared before 11th Judical Distric Judge Thorsen Monday for a hearing and was subsequently released on $100,000 bond.
Cpl. Susan Collins of the Chaffee County Sheriff's Office declined to identify the female victim who was hospitalized after Shurbet reportedly beat her with his fists, duct taped her mouth when she screamed and attempted to sexually assault her the night of July 25, (2007).
Relationship of the victim to Shurbet was not provided.
Collins reported in the arrest affidavit the victim said she went to Holiday RV Center in Poncha Ssprings in an attempt to get keys to the Shurbet residence so she could pick up some of her belongings.
She reportedly didn't know shurbet was at the business.
When she realized Shurbet was there, the victim told Collins she tried to leave. Shurbet allegedly grabbed the victim, dragged her to the shop area and began hitting her with his fists, Collins reported.
The victim alleged she had duct tape over her mouth for what she believed was about an hour, Collins reported the victim was prevented from leaving while shurbet beat her entire body with his fists, verbally abused her and attempted to sexually assault her.
Collins reported Shurbet allegedly threatened to kill the victim, her friend and himself if she went to the police.
The victim told the officer she felt as though she would be killed by the beating and said she told Shurbet she wouldn't contact police if he let her go.
It was not clear if the victim contacted law enforcement or if someone else did on her behalf.
She sustained "numerous contusions about her entire body," several broken ribs, facial fractures and bleeding in her lungs, according to the arrest affidavit
When the arrest affidavit was issued, Collins said medical exams were not complete and additional injuries might be discovered.
The arrest warrant shows first-degree kidnapping is a Class 1 felony and second-degree assault is a Class 4 felony.
Shurbet is scheduled to appear again in district court August 16, (2007)

Steve'sassertion of what he represents to be FACT is clearly flawed as much as his description of the alleged facts and is not even communicated in complete sentences, much like the RV service policy that I experienced. STAY AWAY!

Police arrest suspect on stalking charges
by Christopher Kolomitz
Mail Managing Editor
Stephen Owen Shurbet, 44 of Poncha Springs, was arrested on stalking charges Aug. 17 by Chaffee County Sheriff's Deputies.
Shurbet is being held in the Chaffee County Detention Facility in lieu of $500,000 bail.
Shurbet was first arrested July 26 on charges of first-degree kidnapping, second-degree assault and domestic violence.
He appeared July 30 before 11th Judicial District Judge David Thorsen and was subsequently released on $100,000 bond.
The stalking charges stem from a tracking device Shurbet allegedly had installed on a truck owned by the victim in the kidnapping, assault and domestic violence charges.
Investigators received a tip about the tracking device from the victim, the arrest warrant for Shurbet reported.
Allegedly the device was installed before the July 26 arrest of Shurbet and was subsequently found Aug. 4 in the truck by a friend of the victim.
The warrant indicates investigators received the device from the friend via mail and subsequently examined the vehicle for more clues.
In the arrest warrant, officials said they found the device had been wired to the vehicle power system in a manner to keep it hidden.
Investigators interviewed a friend of Shurbet's living in Caon City who admitted installing the device, the warrant shows.
Shurbet reportedly told the friend he believed the victim in the case was seeing other men and wanted the device in the truck so he could keep track of her, the arrest warrant showed.
