I got a letter offering me free rings N a Walmart gift card, I only had to pat $3.95 shipping. Well, I called like U r supposed to, the lady, after getting my shipping info N bank card info, kept pushing me to purchase from their affiliate cf companies as well, I kept telling her I'm only getting the ring N paying shipping. Not interested in anything else, she kept saying stuff they're offering N she'd state like I was agreeing, N I loudly N angrily told her mom, do not put me on anything. I'm not buying anything, I'm not interested in anything but the one ring. Next thing I know, they took money out of my SSI DISABILITY ACCT. And signed me up for some BUYER DISCOUNT CLUB,which I told lady on phone I was not interrested in. I also have to call them tomorrow as well. I'm very upset, I told that lady I am disabled N cannot afford to sign up for anything whatsoever! N she did it anyways...

I went to Holsted website and found they're offering two rings for $4.95 each for shipping and handling...HOWEVER... this is the catch: "Accepting the FREE rings also entitles you — if you choose — to preview upcoming items from each corresponding collection. You have absolutely no obligation to buy anything. If you wish to preview upcoming items, you don’t have to do a thing. A new item that coordinates with each FREE ring will be sent to you in about four weeks. For each upcoming piece you receive, you'll pay just $59.99 plus $6.99 shipping and handling, and you can decide whether you’d like to keep it, or send it back in exchange it for either a new piece of jewelry or a merchandise credit. If you don’t wish to preview additional items you may cancel your preview option after you receive your free ring(s) by calling our toll-free telephone number included in the shipment. As a member of the Holsted Jewelers program, you will also receive exclusive opportunities to purchase special offering and Jewelry as they become available. We will provide advance notice of these special offerings with full descriptions, pricing, and instructions on how to notify us if you do not wish to receive them. Duplicate orders will not be approved or fulfilled."

So, basically by accepting the "free" rings you are committing yourself to keep saying no per the instructions they send you. If you fail to say no in the proper way you have authorized them to charge you and ship the new jewelry item. Hope this helps explain what happened.
