Hopefully this will get me some advice besides telling my story.

I have a "collection account" for Honor Creditors on my credit report. This "account" was sold to them by FAN Distributing Company just as it was about to be removed from my report becuase of the seven year limitation of reporting for Pennsylvania. The "account" that FAN sold to Honor was sold to them by another company, UNIFUND CCR Partners, before that.

My biggest thing is that this was OBVIOUSLY sold to keep it on my report. But, there are a couple other things that add to my problem and dismay.

First, I have NEVER BEEN CONTACTED by ANY of these threee creditors regarding this "collection acccount." Second, I havent the faintest idea what company the original debt is for, or if it even IS my debt. The "original" debt of $1800 in 1996 is up to $4000+ as of June, 2003.

I know that if I contact the latest company for information regarding it, that I will be harrassed and bombarded. It's not like I have hidden for the past 9 years either!

Please, does ANYONE have anything to add and have any advice on how to solve this or find out WHO the original creditor is without getting myself exposed to constant harrassment?

Helpful Info There are a lot of rules regarding credit reporting

There are a lot of rules regarding credit reporting and you can contact the Federal Trade Commission who regulates credit bureaus and collection agnecies and have them send you information or find it on their web site. I would also dispute it with the credit bureau. I am pretty sure that they can not just pop it on there 7 years after the debt.

Have they sent you any demand letters? If they have I would sent the a letter disputing the amount and requesting verification of the debt via certified mail.

I would also pull my credit report online from the 3 major credit bureaus. I have had previous dealings with Unifund and they Trans Union and Equifax different dates.

Do not be suprised if you find different dates on you credit reports this is a common practice and complaint by and against Unifund. A lot of times debt collectors have only information contained in a credit file that may be incorrect to go on.

Unifund may file a lawsuit agansit you. If they do, do not let them use their attornies or the courts to intimidate you. They like for you not to respond to the complaint with the courts so that they can get a default judgement so file an answer with the court.

They also use the courts to intimidate you into sigining a consent agreement do not do that. Bud Hibbs is a consumer advocate and has some helpful information on his website regarding Unifund at budhibbs.com.

There is also a link to a website so that you can find a lawyer in your area who can give you advice. Please not that I am not and Bud Hibbs is not an attorney and please use the link on his websit to the NACA to find a lawyer in your area.

If you cannot find a lawyer you may also want to contact your local bar association to find lawyers in your area. The bar association cannot appoint you a lawyer but they may be able to refer you to ones in youre area.
