I saw all those ads about Hughes.net and how fast it is, etc. We've had DSL through local land line until now, and it is on the old copper wire(had been listening to Bell South/'THE NEW ATT tell us that "the new fiber optics are coming very soon"-for the last FIVE years)and every time it rained, the internet took a dump!
So HughesNet looked too good to be true-it's true, though, ALL of the internet providers (ISP's) are RIPPER-OFFERS--they ALL tie you into long contracts, and each one requires 'a new modem'.
So we got stuck into a 24 month contract; the serviceman arrives, an HOUR LATE, but he was very nice, but would not install the cable on the same side as our computers...so I had to buy a special 'wireless' router, which, it turns out is not really wireless at all, but had to string cables across the back of my house so that they would reach our computers on the other side-I feel BEYOND stupid!! Not a body explained to me how this all had to work previously!
Oh yes, and the 'modem'--a huge ugly 'Christmas tree' as we call it, and it's costing me an EXTRA $20(PLUS taxes) because I didn't bill the whole amount of the contract at the beginning(12/2007)-WHO can afford it????

I thought this would be more affordable than the DSL and the land lines were costing together, but the down time when this thing 'has a bad day' is ridiculous!!
NO ONE told us about the 'FAIR ACCESS POLICY'!!! So, if one of your kids goes on say, an online game or Itunes, and downloads a while, it causes the who reception to take a dump and run slower than a dead man! IT SUCKS and DON'T consider it!! I have no idea who to complain to-their customer service gets you to someone in India or Pakistan or the Phillipines and it takes TWO to THREE hours minimum EACH time you call and hold, hold, hold...I think they know this and keep it that way so you won't call and complain, but that didn't stop me several times.

If I break the contract, I was told I'll have to come up with FOUR HUNDREDsomething dollars 'for the equipment'...Wished this crap was up during Hurricane Wilma (sustained winds of 135mph for over 45 minutes here!), then nature would have done it for me!

Do yourselves a favor and DON'T buy Hughes.net--they STINK and as soon as my contract is up, they are too, LOL, that is if I don't LOSE my whole house before that--don't get me started on Countrywide Mortgage...
