My roommate and I purchased a puppy from Indogneato in the Westminster Mall and noticed it had a runny nose. The salesgirl assured us it was only a mild cold and that all of the puppies have them from their close living arrangements. They sold her under the condition that we took her to their vet. We took her the very next day and were assured her lungs were fine and she only had a mild cold. We were given an antibiotic and sent on our way.

Her conditioned worsened over the next couple days and we attempted to get her another appointment right away but they told us they were booked up. We had no choice but to take her to our vet and they did a thorough inspection. Here was her diagnosis: pneumonia, hepatocutaneous syndrome (liver failure), otitis externa, and conjunctivitis. She was determined to be highly critical and was hospitalized immediately. The pet store manager Dawn was contacted continuously through her 8 day stay and struggle for life in the hospital and each time we were assured the pet store would cover ALL of the charges that were not parasite related. Since all of the charges were not related to parasites, we sent all of the itemized information and doctor's documents as requested. $4,137 later, our puppy was finally discharged and had to be kept on two antibiotics, eye drops, ear drops, and a bronchodilator. Two weeks following that we had not received any check and continuously contacted Dawn at the pet store. She kept evading us and finally cut us a check for only 150% of the charges and refused to pay the rest claiming that she didn't realize how much it would be even though the vet tech that contacted her let her know the total had gone above the amount and she ok'd it.

The other thing we realized after purchasing this puppy is that they knew the dog was sick, their vet checked it out before we took it home and they had our puppy in the same little cage as another very healthy golden retriever which surely must have caught the pneumonia. We feel sorry for the person who purchased that puppy. They breached their contract when the salesperson signed the health contract saying the puppy did not need to be hospitalized. We have sent a demand for payment letter (the second one) and on July 6th if we have not received a response, we will be suing in small claims court and possibly reporting their establishment to the media.

If there are any other victims of this pet store (and I know there are two others at least on this page) please contact me if you would be willing to testify as witnesses to the lack of care and health concerns. We have so much documentation, photographs, expert witnesses and x-rays that we are sure we will win our lawsuit, but we don't want anyone else making the same mistake of purchasing from this pet store. Also, coincidentally all of their breeders are from North Dakota - this happens to be where their corporation Chien et Chat is located. Here is the address in case anyone needs it: Chien et Chat, Inc 2108 S. University Suite 106B Fargo, ND 58103 - Phone number is (701)892-8367.

If any lawyers, class-actions suits, media would like to contact me I'd be more than willing to have your input or help in putting these people out of business.

Not everything is what it seems

AUTHOR: Kristina - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, March 19, 2006

Yes lots and lots of pet stores practice unsanitary conditions and use inheritable breeders. Indogneato (Chien Et Chat) cares very much about the health of there pets, it is a top priority. Example there is a person hired to just care for the puppies, a kennel cleaning crew that bleaches and cleans each kennel every morning (even days we are closed). On that note employees take time on holidays to come in and care for the animals as well as taking home sick puppies to monitor over night when it is not possible to go to the vet. It is impossible to clean every kennel the second it gets dirty but a close eye is looking out and there are set chores and times to do things like clean and change papers. Indogneato does not get there puppies from puppy mills, some of the breeders they work with only sell to indogneato. A good rule of thumb that most people are not aware of is that puppies are not supposed to be walked, or touch any ground that the owner does not know a sick dog could have passed through. Until a rabies vaccination is give and this is at 4 months a puppy can very easily pick up diseases. The point is Indogneato is a good company and they care very much. Yes things could be improved but couldn't they with anything. These puppies get constant attention, love, good food and a happy environment. They do not spend all of their time in the kennels, no they can not be walked for disease reasons but they do have free time where they are aloud to run and play. Honestly some dogs will have worse lives after they leave the store than they ever did while in it.

Don't Lie or exaggerate

AUTHOR: T - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, December 14, 2005

To the owner of the Dog:Don't lie or exaggerate your story. Even if you try to sue them under small claims court they can now bring up this website which will incrimate yourself. They can now prove that your a liar which will impose on your character(just make you look bad). Yes you were mad and I understand but you can't make up storys. If what you said is true and you have the paperworks(from yours and their vet) to prove your story then it almost a sure win under small claims court which you can file at the westminster court house. Most likely from what I can tell is the store has all their paperwork in order. Verbal agreement never really works in court. Must bring sign paperwork. Hope things go well for both partys.

Previous Rebuttal to be rescinded, but not original statement

AUTHOR: Jennifer - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, November 10, 2005

Due to the threat of a possible defamation lawsuit, I am hereby rescinding my previous rebuttal to the statements made by the owners of Indogneato/Chien et Chat. I also would like to apologize if anything that I said in my previous statement cast a bad light on their character or was personally offensive to them. I absolutely stand by my original statement on this site because everything I said in it was 100% true, but recognize that in my rebuttal to their rebuttal I became angry and was emotionally charged due to the untrue statements made in their rebuttal. Let it be known that my statement in my rebuttal was 100% opinion from my personal views of what had happened and only the first statement should be taken as fact.

Although they did not deny that their puppies come from puppy mills, I have no first-hand knowledge of where they actually get their animals and was given this information from a 3rd party which may or may not have been true. The person who informed me was a vet tech and said that our puppy had a scar on her stomach which was consistent with puppy mills. The problems my puppy suffered, the emotional and financial problems I have suffered are all true and I am only taking back and apologizing for my harsh words in my rebuttal. They were not intended to be slanderous and were spoken in the heat of the moment. Please also note that I have asked the owner of the rip-off reports site to remove my rebuttal and they responded that they will not remove it because the public has a right to know.

Also let it be known that if the company follows through with a defamation lawsuit that I will pursue legal representation from the ACLU and ensure proper media attention to this matter.

Thank you for the follow-up posts by readers. It's important that other people realize that buying from pet stores is almost always a bad idea. I was ignorant of this until my situation occurred and will definitely be checking with this site for any information about future purchases I will make. Thanks for the support.

It breaks my heart every time I see one of these reports.

I am so sorry about your sick puppy. What kind of dog is it? Looks to be a cattle dog from the picture.

It breaks my heart every time I see one of these reports.

When will people learn to not buy puppies from a pet store? You are more than likely to be paying a lot more that if you bought from a private party, the chance of getting a healthy pup from a pet store is very small and the biggest issue is you are supporting puppy mills when you buy from a pet store.

They always want to give you that line about "buying only from reputable local breeders" Bull*&^%. Reputable breeders don't sell to pet stores!

Please look up puppymills on the internet, it will make you sick. People must spread the word about these sick, uncaring, greedy creeps. This must be stopped.

Small Claims court

AUTHOR: Sean - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, November 09, 2005

Please take the pet store to small claims court. It's quite apparent that you will get nowhere with the pet store unless you take legal action. Small claims court does not require you to have an attorney, and you will be able to file a suit to e reimbursed for all your costs.

Rebuttal to the Rebuttal from the Owner: Checked by a Vet? Bull

AUTHOR: Jennifer - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, November 06, 2005

I am the person who initially filed this complaint. This particular dog was NOT checked by their pet store vet 3 times as they said it was. We were told they would check her once before she left the store and when checked was NOT in satisfactory condition. She was sick and it was written on the paperwork that she was sick (according to their vet) it was only a little cold. We took her to THEIR vet to follow up the VERY next day after purchasing and she was given a medication that destroyed her liver by a brand new vet who didn't even do the full check that they said they are supposed to do. Her conditioned worsened (due to the liver problems and pneumonia) in only 2 days (so that is not over 15 days math genius assholes that is only 3 days) THREE days after purchase she was in near death condition. We tried THREE times to make an appointment with their vet but there was nothing available and we had to save our pet so we took her to our vet for a follow up to get a second opinion. They actually ran some tests on her and did an X-ray and found she had Pneumonia and a failing liver. She had to be hospitalized on the 5th or 6th day and her ENTIRE treatment ended even before the 15 day limit was up from purchase. After TONS of phone calls to the company and their ongoing promises to completely refund every single charge (they were updated on costs regularly) they backed out and refused to pay the fees. It is a LOOOONG time later and I'm still paying off the vet fees today. So far I still have $3,688.00 left to pay for that dog they sold. They signed paperwork saying that the dog did not require hospitalization which was good for the 15 days and STILL after she was hospitalized within that time period refused to pay the vet fees. These people expect you to just buy their animal at outrageous prices (same dog I found out later to my dismay costs only $300) and then when they get sick, put them to sleep, kill them. They do NOT care about dogs and their dogs DO come from puppy mills. I encourage you all to NEVER EVER purchase any animals from this store. They are sinister and they are crooks. If you are currently dealing with hospital/Vet charges do not believe any promises for refunds because you will not get them!

Company Response

AUTHOR: Indogneato - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, November 06, 2005

As the owners of this pet store, our response to this report is as follows:

Because each of us is a pet lover, each of us own three dogs ourselves. To protect the health of each pet we sell, we require that the pet's health be checked by a veterinarian at least three times before being sold, and request that the health of the pet be checked at least once by our veterinarian fifteen days after the sale at no extra cost to the customer. Thus, if the customer follows our recommendation, the health of each pet that we sell will be checked at least four times by a veterinarian at no cost to the customer. Then, if there is a problem with the pet, we will pay reasonable veterinarian costs up to 150% of the cost of the pet if the costs were related to a health problem that existed at the time of sale of the pet (excluding parasites) or if caused by a genetic or hereditary issue that arose within one year of the sale of the pet.

In this particular case, this pet was checked four different times by a veterinarian and each time the health of the pet was deemed satisfactory. Each of these checks was at no cost to the customer. Sometime after the last check, the pet started to have problems. When this occurred, according to our policy, we paid 150% of the purchase price of the pet. Thus, in this case, we paid for the cost of the pet, the transportation of the pet, all costs while the pet was in our possession, and 150% of the purchase price of the dog. Also, the pet, at no cost to the customer, received four free veterinarian visits. In total, this pet cost us an extra $850.00 over what we received for the pet. While expensive, we are willing to do this each and every time to ensure that each and every pet we sell is as healthy as possible. Also, because of this, we truly believe that we obtain and sell the healthiest pets in the industry.

Owners Indogneato.
