After researching a number of companies, I ordered some MRE's (Meals, Ready-to-Eat) from IMS. Based on the photograph of MRE's on their website at
http://www.imsplus.com/image.php?object_type=detailed&image_id=1436&window=popup
I drew the conclusion that the MRE's were essentially the same as the military issue ones. So I ordered two cases.
When the MRE's arrived, I discovered that they are NOT as pictured. Instead of the MRE' pictured, I received cheap knock-offs that were nowhere close to the military issue ones or to the photograph on the IMS website. Military issue MRE's typically contain an entree, a side, some crackers or bread and either peanut butter or cheese spread, a cookie or small cake, and maybe some raisins or dried fruit and of course the accessory pack and heater pack.
The meals I received contained only an entree, two small packs of two crackers each, a granola bar and and "energy bar". There was an accessory packet with spoon, salt and such included with each, as was a flameless heater pack.
MRE's can't be returned, and this is noted on the IMS website. So I am stuck with these crappy knockoffs instead of the military-style MRE's I had been led to believe I was purchasing.

I went to www.mreinfo.com and got educated on where to get good MRE's and which ones to avoid. Under a heading which reads "Avoid These" on the Civilian MRE page I found a picture of the EXACT pseudo-MRE's I received from IMS. I have now found several good sources for MRE's and don't mind paying a few extra $$$ for quality ones. Thanks for your suggestions.
I found also that the heater packs that came with the rations I got from IMS are dated 1992. The paper packets that hold the reactive chemical have deteriorated and a lot of the granules have gotten loose in the heater bags. When you put the MRE packet and water in the heater bag, all those loose granules foam up and get ALL OVER the MRE. You have to wash the packet off before you can open it because the granules are not to be ingested.
