Over the past six weeks, the Columbus, Ohio franchise of It's Just Lunch has wasted my time by failing to return calls as promised. Additionally, one of the receptionists treated me very rudely the last time I called. Below is a summary of my contacts with IJL.

Jan 20 at about 1:00PM - I visited IJL's location in downtown Columbus and spoke briefly with Pamela Lanier, president of the franchise according to her business card. She advised me that I needed to call her to set up an appointment.

Jan 20 at about 2:00PM - I called IJL and asked to speak with Pamela. According to the receptionist, she was busy, so I left the receptionist my name and number. I was told that Pamela would get in contact with me within the next week. Pamela failed to get back to me.

Jan 31 at ??? (I don't have a time record for this one) - I called IJL again to follow up. After telling the receptionist that I had called before and Pamela had never gotten back to me, she told me that she would make sure Pamela called me back the next day between 4:00 and 5:00PM. Pamela failed to call me back, again. I changed my schedule to be able to take the call, so IJL wasted my time by not returning it.

Feb 2 at about 10:30AM - I again called and told the receptionist that two of my calls had gone unreturned. The receptionist apologized and told me Pamela would get back to me THAT DAY at 2:00PM. Pamela didn't call. I decided to wait awhile before trying again.

Feb 11 at about 4:30PM - I finally got through to Rochelle Loraine, a senior director at the franchise. She told me that Pamela had taken an extended leave due to a family emergency. I thought this might explain Pamela's poor customer service. Rochelle advised me that IJL would not be taking any new clients until March due to Pamela's absence. Fair enough.

Mar 4 at 9:15AM - I called and asked for either Pamela or Rochelle. Both were "with clients" (as always). The receptionist told me that Rochelle was booked the entire day, and that Pamela would contact me within 2-3 hours. I changed my schedule so I could be around to take the call. Of course, she failed to do so.

Mar 4 at 3:30PM - I called back asking why Pamela had failed to contact me. The receptionist told me to leave my name and number. I told her that I had already done so four times previously, with nothing to show for it. She replied that there was nothing else she could do. Here's where it starts to get ugly. I gave the receptionist my name and number one final time, but said that if Pamela failed to call me back, that I would take my business elsewhere. The receptionist rudely stated "I don't take well to threats!".

I began to tell her that it was nothing personal, just business, but she hung up on me in midsentence. I consider this an improper response, given that I never raised my voice, called her names, or engaged in any uncivil behavior. I simply stated my intentions in a matter-of-fact, businesslike tone so that IJL would understand that its actions have economic consequences.

Oh, and Pamela again failed to return my call.

At present, I would advise prospective clients of IJL Columbus to reconsider joining, since if they can't be bothered to return calls in order to close a sale, it is unlikely that existing clients are able to reach staff in a timely manner to ask questions or resolve problems.

What I expect: An apology for my wasted time and the receptionist's actions.

I invite representatives of IJL Columbus and IJL Corporate to use the Rebuttal Box so we can resolve this civilly.

Consider yourself LUCKY!

AUTHOR: Beth - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, April 21, 2007

If you've never paid any money to It's Just Lunch, run as fast as you can in the other direction. I live in Orange County, California and signed up with their service two years ago. They promised 14 compatible dates, attempting to deliver within one year. I've had 10 dates in two years and not one of them was even close to being compatible. They interview you for about 15 minutes when you sign up to take notes on what you're looking for, but good luck ever getting a date that fits. Not one of the guys I went out with were even close.

Several of the dates they had arranged were totally screwed up. They sent me to one restaurant and my date to another. They don't answer phones after hours and since they don't give you any phone number for the person you're supposed to be meeting, there is nothing you can do but go back home.

I went through at least three different contacts in this time. It seems as though they can't keep even their bad employees.

After many phone calls to them complaining about their service I decided to write them a letter to demand my money back. I told them I would take them to small claims court for breech of contract. In exchange for signing a disclaimer saying that I would not go public with my story, they did offer to give me my money back, but I never received a check.

In my last conversation with them I was told the new owners would get right back to me. Yea, right! I've been calling them for three weeks now and finally have filed the paperwork to sue them in small claims court to get my money back.

The It's Just Lunch franchise spends a lot of money on slick magazine advertising. Don't be fooled! Google "its just lunch complaints" and you'll find a whole bunch of other people with the same story. Check Consumer Reports too. I wish I had before I paid this company any money.

I'm sorry if you took offense, none was intended. My comment about IJL was the same for any company. If they don't have the courtesy to return your calls, dump them. My troutline comment seems to have gotten lost somewhere. What I meant is, there are many good women out there and IMO, one doesn't need to go to a dating service to find them. Met my one and only wife of 16 years, next week, 23 years ago.

Bad Business. The ratio of men to women is VERY out of Balance. They do not match clients the way they promise.

AUTHOR: Katheryn - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, July 31, 2005

My comments to you are that if you have not given them money- then dont! The ratio of men to women is VERY out of Balance. They do not match clients the way they promise. I once was told to force a match between a 6 ft 9 man and a 5 foot 2 woman even though the man SPECIFICALLY did not want to meet anyone below 5'9.

I was so stressed after 3 days employeed there, that the moment The new owner came in that morning I quit.

Corporate Does not Care

AUTHOR: Russell - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, June 22, 2005

IJL is franchised. Any complaint sent to corporate is simply sent to the franchisee and they are told to take care of it. If it says that Pamela is the President then she is the one that owns the business. If you have not given them any money I can assure you that they could care less about your woes.

Just a word from someone who knows.

Cory and Paul need to get a life!

AUTHOR: Jonathan - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, April 13, 2005

I can't believe that Paul from Anaheim CA and Cory from San Antonio TX have nothing better to with their lives than to belittle people for using dating services. The question they should ask themselves is how many bad relationships have they been in or how many times they have been divorced. Take your trout line theory and go fishing with one of your ex-wifes and leave people who are tring to find a sucessful relationship alone.

Taken The Hint?

AUTHOR: Cory - (U.S.A.)

After the fourth or fifth time, I would have taken the hint. If they are too screwed up to return your calls, I would have gone elsewhere.

#2 Consumer Suggestion

Try the desperation dating service instead. Or, maybe the stalker's hotline.

AUTHOR: Paul - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, March 15, 2005

Dude, if a woman doesn't return your call after 1 or 2 tries, what does that mean?

SHE DOESN'T WANT TO TALK TO YOU!

Most people know this. What planet are you from anyway?

If you keep calling back, it just makes you look desperate. In the future, leave your number once. If they're interested, they'll call. If not, move on and try another dating service.

Learn how to read the clues. People don't come right out and tell you they aren't interested. They use an excuse, like not now, or I'm busy.

When you hear those things, it means I'm not interested.

Easy to see why you're at a dating service!

Sent email to corportate...no response

AUTHOR: Colin - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, March 14, 2005

On 3/4/2005, at the same time I wrote the above Ripoff Report, I sent an email to IJL CEO Daniel Dolan (daniel@ijlcorp.com) asking him or his representative to intervene on my behalf to get an apology from the Columbus franchise. As of 3/14/2005, I have received no reply.

Therefore, I would advise against dealing with ANY IJL franchise, as Corporate probably sets an example for its franchisees.
