Domain Registration and Hosting are 2 separate things

I've tried to explain this to several people on here, but I keep seeing more and more complaints about it. Domain names and hosting plans are not the same thing!
A domain name registration simply gives you ownership of the web site address (which you can choose to have hosted at ANY hosting company).
A hosting plan gives you access to server space which you use to host your web site files (again, at the hosting company of YOUR choice).
Although domain names and hosting plans are usually purchased at the same time, they are still 2 separate things, both of which require renewal.
It sounds like you bought a promotional package where they waived the first year of the domain registration for you because you signed a 3-year hosting agreement. Now that the first year is up, you need to pay for the domain name renewal for the second year. That's not a rip-off.
The easy solution at this point is to simply request that you domain name renewal be on the same terms as your hosting plan (i.e., you have 2 years left on your hosting plan, so go ahead and pay for a 2-year domain name registration). This way you will get one bill for all services at the same time.
