Jefferson Capital Systems and Fingerhut Credit Advantage, according to the Fingerhut representative, stated these are now two separate companies. I've attempted to contact Jefferson Capital Systems and I've yet to receive a response (odd how both companies are in the same cities, isn't it?)
I them logged on to the Federat Trade Commission website: ftc.gov and filed a formal fraud complaint with the federal government.
Jefferson Capital and/or Fingerhut Credit Advantage state that I owe a balance of nearly $1,000.00! **This is NOT my account**
In addition to filing a formal compaint with the FTC, I followed through and filed complaints with the three major credit reporting bureaus: Experian, TransUnion and Equifax.
I don't know what's going on with these companies... or it may be a case of identify theft, but I WILL get this resolved one way or the other. It's just too bad that Jefferson Capital Systems AND Fingerhut are not willing to assist consumers in matters of this type.... especially since there seem to be so many.
Sounds like a Class Action to me.

I've reviewed my credit report more closely and have found at least two other items that are (at the least) questionable.
HINT: With the Federal Trade Commission's new act that allows all consumers to access their credit file once per year free of charge, I STRONGLY SUGGEST that everyone do this, especially after reading Sherri's rebuttal.
Again. Sherri ... valuable info. Thanks!
Anna
ps: Major KUDO's to "Rip-Off Report.com" for providing this venue.
I'm thinking (as Sherri suggests) because of the lucrative trend in identity theft, illegal data collection practices and "bottom feeders" of the ilk I've encountered with JEFFERSON CAPITAL and FINGERHUT CREDIT ADVANTAGE, et al., this site will become an even greater information resource/rip-off clearinghouse in the near future.
**Keep up the GREAT WORK LADIES AND GENTLEMEN!**

THESE PEOPLE ARE FRAUDS - junk debt buyers and they don't give a d**n

They are junk debt buyers and they don't give a d**n if the "debt" is yours or not..."gimme the money" is their mantra. They will put erroneous information on your credit in the hopes that you will fall for their extortion in an attempt to clear your credit report. Guess what? It won't happen. What WILL happen is that you will make the "easy mark" list and more "phantom debts" will appear over time. Bad thing is..if you do send them money, you "reaffirm" the "debt" and get the Statute of Limitations started again. Another little scheme they have is the "Majestic Visa", which is another fraudulent attempt to get you to reaffirm.
Good thing you did report this. You also need to report this to the California Attorney General's office..the complaint form is online.
Make them validate. They have to prove it's your debt..believe me, they can't. If they can't validate and refuse to remove the entry from your credit, you can sue them for damages.
Bad thing is, with all of the financial information security breaches going on, I think this is going to happen to more and more people..people with good credit as well as people with not-so-good credit. These bottomfeeders don't care if they ruin someone's credit fraudulently..it is all about the quick buck.

Edit Addendum:
When I spoke to the Fingerhut rep this a.m. he provided me the mailing address of "CompuCredit", yet another company involved in this scheme/scam:
CompuCredit
PO Box 7999
St. Cloud, MN 56302
FAX: 320-229-8583
Again, I find it odd that all three companies are located in the same city. ARE they one and the same? Makes one even more suspicious, given the fact that NONE of them can (or will) provide any solid information regarding balance or account disputes.
ps: An important note ... I've NEVER been contacted by ANY of these companies regarding this account, even though it shows up on ALL THREE credit bureau reports as "COLLECTIONS".
