I worked for Suntan Supply for over 2.5 years. During that time, I was a salaried employee, yet, I was "docked" pay for missing a few hours during any given week. For example, I could work 90 hours in a 2 week period and not get paid over time, but even if I missed a few hours (let's say for a dr appt), they would take it out of my pay. They even made their salaried employees "clock in"...pathetic.
They bragged about offering their employees "free" healthcare, however, there was a $2000.00 deductible!!!
The owners split the company into several different companies (J.L. Wilson, JLW Construction, Sunwalls, T.W. Tan) to avoid paying unemployment, to avoid paying for the family medical leave act - basically they split it up to make more money for themselves. Also, anytime the service employees work overtime, they cut them a separate check under the table, so they could avoid paying them overtime. Something about interstate commerce law...Nearly everything they do is barely legal and they do anything to avoid paying their employees what they are worth.
From what I understood, one of the owner's wives continues to be on the payroll, even though she hasn't worked there in years. This owner would brag to his employees that he himself made less than $30,000 a year (less than you, he'd say), avoiding taxes, etc...so, how in the world did he build a mansion in one of the most elite cities west of Cleveland? His income is much higher.
Nearly every single member of upper management is related in some way, so there is absolutely no chance of advancing. Everything is so skewed there that while these family members are generally educated, they have one manager there who didn't even graduate from high school!
One of the owners in particular was racist, and openly made fun of many races. He called Asians names, made fun of how they spoke, etc...especially since many of his customers were Asian, I heard this quite often. They used the "N" word. They were also very open about women, calling co-workers "hot" in my presence, staring at them, laughing like schoolboys. It was pathetic. One former employee was an exotic dancer and one of the owners let her openly flirt (touching) with him at work in my presence. Comments were made directly to female employees about what they were wearing that particular day, etc. Using the "F" word was commonplace, used amidst a myriad of other obscenities. After awhile, it was something you had to get used to.
The building itself was not clean either. There was a severe rodent infestation. So, they got a cat. That seemed to help, but since one of the owners flat out refused to get it fixed (they couldn't be bothered with the money or the time), that cat urinated everywhere, making the whole place smell horrible. So, what do they do? They took it to a shelter, knowing that it was an unfriendly cat and would surely be put down.

Overtime on separate check that must have been nice. They pay only straight time. Many 80 hr weeks no overtime paid!!!!! They have the most dysfunctionall crew ever. Starts at the top Marty one of the owners who is trying to supplement income thru ebay since he can't run suntan supply like he couldn't keep his construction company. Thank God for family money or he would be on the unemployment line. Human resource mgr Terry is married to Marty's sister. So who do you thinks best interest he has at hand? Marty that's who not the employees. There service department is a joke. I watched them turn hour meters back and replace with different ones.
Theye have service techs with suspended license drive there vehicles(I personally know two drivers) these vehicles by the way are death traps which is a joke around the front office. Marty claims how great they are lol. Besides being mechanically unsafe their box trucks lift gates don't even fit tanning beds. But I guess that's ok because half the time they didn't work. They do quote body work on beds in the open with different epoxys and spray paint in enclosed building. U can't get down isles in warehouse because there is junk everywhere!
There service crew has one great tech the rest of them are jokes. First u have there veteran who was pulled off the road for damage to everything he touched. He was very proud to tell u about his drug problems and how much money he puts up his nose (everyone knows there also) Again he drives a fork lift there. I think I will stop there. I know so much more about suntan supply and sun walls but will leave that for proper authorities. I have contacted attorney about there no over time pay. Should have a update in a week or so on that. Thanks for your time Thank God I don't work there anymore.

I worked for this company as well and know first hand that the previous report is completely true! There are two other facts the first person failed to mention. One is that this company would pay employees thier regular paycheck through a legitimate payroll company for 40 hours worked per week, but any hours worked beyond that were paid through the reguar checking account as "contract" employees at the straight time rate (as previously reported). There were many people also paid exclusively as "contract" employees in this manner as well. It is illegal to pay "on file" employees in this manner and if a company pays someone who is not a regular employee then the company MUST file a 1099 form at the end of the year. These forms are to be filed with the federal government if the amount paid to an individual or contact company are over a specified amont which is dependant on the year in which the monies were paid.
None of the companies owned by J. L. WIlson has ever files a 1099 form! Trust me when I say that in thed time I worked there ALL of the "contract" people were well over these limits! There was one year when the controller (also a family member) attempted to file these forms and was completely ignored by the owner(s). The controller had gone as far as purchasing the forms and a software program to run them, but was not allowed to comply with the law!! Also, most of the "contract" people would not be considered such by the true definition of a "contract" employee via federal and state guidelines. In other words, they should all have been "on the books" as regular employees entitled to overtime pay for hours worked over 40 in a given
work week.
The other item not mentioned in the first posting is that if a customer paid one of the owners in cash he would NEVER turn it in to be put through on the books. He would just pocket the money! He would do this even if a legitimate invoice was generated through the computer system. He was notorious for this practice at the yearly trade show done in Pittsburgh. He would do this when customers woulld come to the facility as well. It was therefore no surprise that paychecks and other checks bounced on a regular basis!!!
The owners know what they practice is illegal, yet the continue to do these things and be very smug about it as well. All the people who work there or have ever worked there are just waiting for things to catch up to them and know it is just a matter of time until the doors are closed by the federal government!!
I would advise anyone not to do business with them or work for this company!!
