I had a quick 15 minute interview  for the Account Representative position and was asked to come back the next week for a second interview where I would be taken on a preview of the position "in the field". Well by field, they meant a neighborhood. And by account representative, they meant a door to door salesman for AT&T U-verse. Make no mistake this may be a private company but they are working for AT&T. They build it up as this great team atmosphere when reality it's just a light variation of a scam. They promise their salesman a down-the-road promotion to open up new locations. When in reality the same management team is rotating cities and changing the name of the company when they move. JLC Concepts used to be Powerplay Consulting. When Powerplay had exhausted it resources and employees began to catch on they shut it down and "promoted" someone on the rotating management team to "open" a "new" office. So other employees see someone getting promoted but its actually just a bait and switch.

These guys train to be fast talkers on their potential customers and they turn around and use it on their employees and interviewees. Every time I pushed for information I was always given a roundabout explanation that didn't answer the question. It was to be answered later or pushed off to a different subject.

They confirmed my second interview three times and after talking with the receptionist, no shows seemed to be a problem. I can only assume people find out that this is a door to door sales company and that they turn and run. I also asked the receptionist what she would say the company does. She replied, "I don't really know". However, she did tell me she has a quota of 20 scheduled interviews a day. The turnover rate must be massive.

For my second interview I was told to dress business professional and to bring a change of clothes to business casual and a comfortable pair of shoes for "the field". I sat in the lobby for 45 minutes, even though I was 15 minutes early. There were no meetings with "the big boss" as I was told there would be. When I was finally greeted by the hiring manger I was immediately whisked away to "the field".  We got into this "Exec's" 15 year old hoopty sedan with no A/C whereby he drives me to my car to get my change of clothes. My options are change in the parking lot or "I'll drive you to a gas station to change".

So I change out of the full suit I'm wearing that I so obviously didn't need and into slacks and a collared shirt....in the parking lot of the office on a fair busy street. I'm fine with it, it was just REALLY ODD.  And after this I am by far the best dressed one in the car. The "Exec" is wearing khaki shorts, an ATT t-shirt and vibram five finger shoes and I'm wearing gray slacks, a pressed collared shirt, and a nice pair of Kole Hahns. Awkward. I observed a few sales pitches "in the field" and often what I was being told and what potential customers were being told, didn't exactly add up. More fast talking. More smoke and mirrors.

It was 6 hours into the interview process until they would discuss compensation and advancement. Compensation was either straight commission which they recommended or base pay plus commission. Straight commission was around $100 for every customer you signed up with ATT Uverse. Base pay was $300 per week plus 20% commission(before taxes). All in all I just got a really shady vibe from this company and the way they do business. I didn't stick around to hear about the opportunity for advancement as I assumed that would just be another rabbit hole they were just hoping you would fall into.

The thing that bothers me most about this company is that they avoid telling you at all costs that this is door-to-door sales. I get it, Its a tough grind-it-out job but they are the opposite of upfront about nearly everything. They try to make this job look like a Dodge Viper when really its just a old 2001 Saturn jalopy.  Please JLC, don't dazzle up a job listing to make it look like something it's not. Overall I'm sure they're great people but the sugar coating that comes on everything is just not the way to recruit new employees or run an honest business.
