On Friday, May 8 in Belton, Mo. a woman, Jody, from Jody's Kennel was selling puppies in front of the Noe's/T-Mobile parking lot. She had many different breeds of puppies and I instantly fell in love with a Lhasa Poo. I bought him for $300 and he was a very energetic, loving puppy.

The following day, he began vomiting. I thought nothing of it because I had given him the canned food Jody provided for the first time, rather than the dry food. He was very sleepy the rest of the day and vomited about once every hour for the entire evening.

On May 11, he was due for his next set of shots. I took him to the vet where he was diagnosed with coccidia and an ear infection. We went home with pills and ointment and he seemed fine the rest of the day.

However, the following day was a nightmare. When my puppy awoke, he seemed normal- very energetic and playful. However, as the day progressed, he began vomiting at least once an hour and became very lethargic. He normally follows wherever I go, even if it is to the next room, whether he is sleeping or not. He remained sleeping in a very deep sleep for most of the day. He refused to eat or drink anything. His body was scorching hot and he had an obvious fever. Towards the evening, he began having diarrhea. Because of these symptoms, my grandmother and I took him back to the vet.

There, after blood tests and what-not, he was diagnosed with parvovirus. Keep in mind, this is only four days after I brought the puppy home and it takes seven to ten days to have symptoms show. Four days, $800, and lots of emotional pain later, I got my puppy back. Fortunately, I brought him in early enough and he was able to fight this life threatening disease.

My grandmother and I have contacted Jody, who shows no compassion for the situation. We asked for some help paying for these vet bills, but she argues that the vet is trying to 'rip me off' and that the coccidia makes the parvo test positive.

After much research on her website, we noticed she had a health guarantee that every person should receive with every puppy. Because I did not see her website before I bought my puppy, I was unaware of this guarantee. After mentioning to her that I hadn't received one, she changed her website to say basically that all sales are final, with or without guarantee. She has offered to give my money back, but only if she gets the puppy back. This is obviously not an option.

Also, our local newspaper, The Journal, ran an 'Attention' article that a reader asked them to place. This reader also bought a puppy from Jody and the puppy died within days from parvo. Apparently, all the puppies she was selling had this virus.

Although I am extremely grateful my puppy survived and made it through, I am extremely disheartened that a breeder can get away with selling sick puppies. My heart goes out to the puppies she is selling that are getting sick and to the people who buy them.

Alisha--Puppies with parvo do not run a fever--they're temperature falls below normal

AUTHOR: Cory - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, July 31, 2009

I do not know or have never met Jody, but I do know puppies with parvo have a rapid drop in body temperature. You had stated that this puppy had a fever. This is not the case with parvo.

Another symptom is foul-smelling bloody diarrhea. You never mentioned this--just that the puppy was throwing up. Puppies with parvo do throw up, however, they also have the bloody, foul-smelling diarrhea as well as the major drop in body temperature.

I'm not sure who your vet is, but it would help to get a second opinion before jumping to conclusions. You can have a false-positive on a parvo test. You might try doing a search online for parvo symptoms--it's very educational--just for future reference.

I hope your experience doesn't sway you from buying from a good breeder. There are also puppies in the pet stores that come from good reputable breeders as well. Most puppies there are from USDA and State licensed facilities that keep their dogs/puppies in top-notch condition. Also, the American Kennel Club (AKC) inspects these facilities if they have AKC registered dogs. They also have a licensed vet that comes and inspects as well.

#1 REBUTTAL Owner of company

False Positive from Vaccination and Very Harsh Dewormer says Veterinarian.

AUTHOR: Jody - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, July 29, 2009

Ripoff Report,

I have sent a letter twice to a Terri Mingucci. Once by regular mail on or about 5/23/09, and once by registered mail, on or about 6/18/09 explaining what has happened with the puppy. I have still had no response from her or the purchaser, Alisha. Terri Mingucci is the supposed grandmother (a third party that should not be involved and I would assume filed this complaint with you). She would not give me the purchasers (Alisha) address or phone number. To this day I have still not been able to talk to the owner of the puppy.

The puppy did not get sick until the 12th, the next day after seeing the veterinarian for a puppy wellness check up, vaccinations, and deworming with Drontel plus. I believe that the deworming medication (Drontel Plus) made the puppy sick. It is too harsh for a puppy of that age and weight (12 weeks and 3lbs.). The puppy wasn't sick at the puppy wellness check up the 11th or the veterinarian would have never given the puppy a vaccination or any deworming medication. I have had this same thing happen to me with my puppies twice and both times I had to take the puppy to the veterinarian. So I won't use it on this small of a puppy any more. I learned after the second time what the problem was and that the Drontel Plus was making them sick. As for the Parvo, it is a false positive. I gave the puppy one vacation against Parvo and the veterinarian gave it a second injection the day before it got sick. It would be a false positive because of the vacations for Parvo.

I offered to refund the purchase price on the very first and only phone call and was told NO. So my question would be, why would they want to keep a puppy if it was that sick? I felt that after they refused a refund that there was nothing I could do.

There was nothing wrong with the puppy at the time of purchase. The dewormer made the puppy sick. I have shown my veterinarian the paper work that I received from her veterinarian and my veterinarian totally agrees with me. The Drontel Plus is to strong for this small puppy. Remember the puppy only weighted 3 lbs. and was only 12 weeks old.

I am state licensed and have just recently had an inspection with no deficiencies found. I have a very respectable business and I am not sure what these people want. I have always and will always go the extra mile to make sure that my customers happy and that my puppys are healthy. In my opinion and my veterinarian opinion, there veterinarian caused the problem with the harsh dewormer. I have offered a refund from the very beginning. I know that at the time of purchase the puppy was perfectly healthy. When the puppy leaves my care I have no control after that. I don't know the environment the puppy is going to or what veterinarian the puppy will be seeing or the type of care it will receive.

Because of this incident I have changed some of my procedures when selling a puppy. Hopefully in order to head off any problems like this in the future.
