Dear Rip off report,
I am writing this letter to inform you of what is going on with the Zoom Modeling Agency and John Casablancas in Pittsburgh, PA. I spent almost $3,000 to enroll my 15 year old daughter in John Casablancas with the promises of job opportunities with Cover Girl and auditions with Elite Model Management. They told me Cover Girl is a big client and they do work for them all the time.
Needless to say we were excited since we love the products and are loyal customers. We were never informed these jobs are passing things out at Wal-Mart, they made it seem like it was for the Cover Girl commercials. But it still seemed like a good paying job. When my daughter heard about an upcoming Cover Girl job she asked John Emerick if she could work at one of the Wal-Marts, he told her no she was too young she had to be 16.
My daughter then talked to other girls who were in her class and found out that some girls as young as 14 were doing the Cover Girl job and had done them in the past. One girl even told my daughter that John paid her mom for the job because she was too young.
After hearing all this I decided to do some investigating. I called a friend from college who lives in Cincinnati and works for Proctor & Gamble, he looked into it and told me you needed to be at least 18 years of age to do Cover Girl jobs at Wal Mart.
At this point I became angry and realized John Casablancas was probably lying to Cover Girl and Wal Mart just as they had lied to me. Using underage kids just to collect their commission. Just to make sure I had my facts straight I went to the Wal Mart at Robinson yesterday and saw the girl working and she is only 15 years of age.
I also talked to dozens of parents who's children were ages 15 and 16 and working the Walmart jobs.
I also called Elite Model Management in New York. They told me John Casablancas Modeling Schools have nothing to do with them. That they are not the same company as I was told.
I am not using my name because my daughter still has classes at John Casablancas and I do not want any retaliaiton. I will be contacting the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry to see if any child labor laws have been broken.

THE FACTS

There are many people that feel the same way that you feel, and that is only because they do not understand the Modeling and Acting business.
Our Agency(Zoom) DOES work with Cover Girl, also amongst our list of steady clients is: Pantene Pro-V, Club Zoo, Nice 'n' Easy hair color, Jack Daniels, Southern Comfort, Sonic Pictures, and the list goes on...
We make sure that we NEVER misinform anybody because we believe in the saying that "what goes around comes around" and we do not want to find ourselves in situations like the one that you are describing. (Which is not factual)
I can garentee that you were not told that your daughter would be in Cover Girl commercials. For anybody to say that would be ridiculous because anybody that has ever saw a Cover Girl commercial knows that the faces in those commercials are well established celebrities like Mandy Moore, and Sarah Michelle Gellar.
Zoom works with a promotional company that gives us clients such as those above described, and our talent then promotes that company/product. Whether it be at a Wal-Mart, Sam's Club, or Department store, the model is still working, making money, representing our agency, and getting good resume experience.
Ever hear the saying: " You gotta start somewhere?"
I regret to inform you that your contact at Proctor & Gamble was wrong. Each model in our agency that does promotional work, like the Cover Girl event your daughter was inquiring about, is an independant contractor, meaning that it does not matter what age they are. They are by law, allowed to accept, and get paid for promotional jobs. Other jobs such as freeze modeling, and alcohol promotions have an age limit, but the jobs that you had wasted your time asking "dozens" of parents about do not. Our agency, director, and corporate office would NEVER break any laws- especially child labor laws!
In response to retaliation... we would never retaliate against anybody that had a bad taste in their mouth about our company- Instead- we would appreciate if those people would come to us with their problems, that way we could find a solution. Posting negative remarks about our company is cowardly. Before jumping to conclusions, maybe you should have got your facts straight. We are here to help, and if there is a complaint we urge you to come forward because the staff here is willing to help in any way possible.
As for Elite, we ARE affiliated- and I find it hard to believe that you got through to them, and they actually told you that they had nothing to do with John Casablancas. An agency as established as Elite would not realease information of that nature to any random caller. John Casablancas, the man, is the founder of Elite!
I am personally a product of this company. I attended classes 5 years ago, and I did not follow up on it. I, like most people, expected the agency to contact ME, and to offer jobs to ME, but like ALL agencies, it does not work that way. Finally, 3 1/2 years later, I contacted Zoom and in the 6 months that I worked for them, I made enough money to justify the cost of the training courses. I chose to work at John Casablancas full-time instead of Modeling, but If I were to pursue it again, I know that I would find success.
Just because I wasn't in a Cover Girl commercial, or an Elite model does not mean that I was not successful.
I personally do not appreciate false remarks that hurt the reputation of our company. We have a lot to offer those persuing a modeling and/or acting career, and negativity such as this only closes doors for those who are one the road to success.
