I am an independent film producer. I posted an ad on Craigslist for a sound editor to work on my recently completed feature film's sound design. Justin Van Hout applied to the ad. There were some notable films on his resume and reel however it seems as though Justin worked as an assistant in these uncredited positions and passes the work of the big picture off as his own.

Justin said he could do the entire film for $1,000. I should have known at this point that I was going to get what I paid for, most sound edits go for $5,000-20,000 and upward. In this case, though, I actually didnt get anything at all as I will explain. I paid Justin $500 up front for half of the job. I thought he was young and capable and wanted the credit so I gave him a shot. A week later he said he had finished the first 10 minutes and he sent it over to me. I was excited to see the progress however when I listened to the first couple minutes of the sound I suddenly realized I was not dealing with a professional, instead, someone who had no idea what they were doing. It was apparent that he was trying to learn on the spot.  The audio was in fact actually worse than it was when I sent it to him.

I expressed my dissatisfation to him. There was no way I would be able to take the audio mix that he sent me to any distribution platform, TV, DVD, or even YouTube. The quality was no where near industry standards. I let my composer listen to it as wel, and he said it was the worst job he'd ever heard,  and that Justin should be ashamed of sending that to me. The dialogue was muffled and unnatural from some filter he was playing with, the sound effects were out of place (the characters are at the beach however you hear busy traffic and honking horns), an audience would never sit through the first five minutes. I told him it would be better if I could get a refund.  This, of course, hurt his ego. He got upset, refused to give me any money back, and refused to do anymore work on the film (not that I wanted him to anyway).

I paid him through paypal so I raised a dispute. Due to paypals terms of condition, because this transaction did not include tangible goods, I was unable to get any money back unfortunately. It really hurts to try and self fund your own feature film and someone comes along with an inexperienced ego and steals your money. I should have known better.

Justin Van Hout is a scam. An amateur. He uses footage in his reel from major films where he got an uncredited assistant position. He scowls craigslist ads daily trying to rip off the next low budget indie film producer. Beware.

Proof that Justin Van Hout stinks

AUTHOR: Tauteur - ()

POSTED: Saturday, January 03, 2015

After reading Justin Van Hout 's response, it makes me dislike him more.  He's a twerp.

Justin Van Hout made an excuse that the work he gave me was so terrible because I put him on a short deadline.  I never gave Justin Van Hout a deadline.  He gave me unrealistic, AMATEUR, expectations and told me he could complete the ENTIRE FEATURE FILM sound design in a few weeks.  Fortunately, I have learned to not deal with unprofessional, weak, no talent, inexperienced, craigslist qualidy sound designers.  Anyone who hires Justin Van Hout will not have a chance at any distribution.

Here is an example video showing Justin Van Hout's sound design work:

JUSTIN VAN HOUT   GIVE ME MY MONEY BACK!  I am a self financed film producer who is doing whatever it takes to make a film.  I'm sorry I hurt your feelings by saying I didn't like your work.  I just needed something deliverable.

#1 REBUTTAL Individual responds

Trevor Simms files false claims and conducts in malicious libel and defamation of character!

AUTHOR: Justin - ()

POSTED: Sunday, September 14, 2014

This is in response to a false statement made by one Trevor Simms regarding my audio services.

Trevor contacted me regarding services for a film he was working on. We ultimately came to an agreement via both verbal and written means. Trevor was in a rush and didn't allow me to make changes to the audio, as per the agreement, and breached the contract within a week of agreeing to it. I got the feeling that he was looking for something that could not be provided for this film, as the audio from location I had to work with was inaudible and very noisy to begin with. I only submitted a ROUGH mix of the first ten minutes for him to review and give me some feedback, as this is the normal process in order to make changes, additions, etc.. He was pleased with the sound design I did for said scene, but said that the dialogue was worse than it was to begin with. At that point I had not even touched the dialogue yet and what he was criticizing were original recordings. Again, he was pleased with the sound design and even asked for the sound effects after breaching the contract.

Trevor then began to threaten me via email; stating he would do everything in his power to ruin my reputation and get his money back.  The terms of the contract and invoice clearly state, "there are to be No Returns and No Cancellations at anytime." Trevor agreed to these terms and at this time, still owes money on that contract.

In regards to the claim that I don't know what I'm doing when it comes to audio services, that is Trevor's opinion and he is entitled to it. But when he starts making false claims as to the work I've done for other productions in the past and the agreement between us, that becomes libel and defamation of character- something that is illegal and I will not stand for! I have worked very hard for the last 13 years with clients around the globe to get to the point where I am today and I continue to work hard to maintain those relationships. When individuals make false claims like these in order to save face and need a vent for their anger, they will look for any opportunity to do so.

One last thing.. This case has been decided in my favor, not once, but TWICE via a third party service provider. This means that Trevor and I both submitted our evidence to them regarding this case and they came to a conclusion based on that evidence. In MY favor.

I’m not one for retaliation, but this needs to be put to an end! Much unlike Trevor, I have ample evidence to back up everything I have stated in this report.
