I started attending Kaplan Career Institute in February of 2007. I noted the overly eager sales representative who reeled me in. When I applied they told me they had to see if my financial aid loans have consolidated to allow me to attend. So I went home and the following day I was called and asked if I could get to class because I was okayed by the director to start. I was told by the instructors that the classes we were taking were going to count towards our licensing as electricians, but later down the road I began to hear differently. The School is accredited by the state, but the Electrician program was not recognized by the Electrical board. The school was very uncaring about it's students and the head of the Electrician program was very critical towards us. I found that their were some great teachers their who were also very frustrated with the program itself. I have been attending this school for half of the year and recently was told that none of my loans were consolidated. I was on director's list 5 times and had perfect attendance and grades. But after talking to the head of the Financial aid there was nothing that could be done to help me stay in school. I will be dropped on August 9th of this year unless I can come up with $5,000. I was then told to continue coming or I would fail my current course and it may have to be retaken again if I ever find a way to continue funding my schooling. I am at great odds with this school because I have came to class even when I had an arguement with my family and was living in my car and still maintained honor roll and perfect attendance. They have allowed countless people to come into the program knowing that many of them if they have Felonies cannot get licensed. I am a father of 2 and I struggled going to work and to this school sometimes pulling a 20 hour day 3 days a week. This school treats its students like children we were also all reprimanded by the electrician head instructor for one person stealing a drill and copper. I was insulted because here I was faithfully paying my $50 a month to cover my balance and taking food out of my children's mouths to attend. The fact that this school only cares about money and not its reputation is quite disheartening.

#3 UPDATE EX-employee responds

I am a former Instructor , and agree it is not worth the money

Kaplan Career Institute HVAC Program I had to respond after reading a report, I am a former Instructor at Brooklyn, Ohio

Kaplan Career Institute

I had to respond after reading a report by a former student. I was a former Instructor at Kaplan, and I left the school after seeing students I felt were being ripped off in the HVAC Program. I know they were being charged $16,000 dollars for a one year program ,and we could not teach it ,due to only having half of the equipment. Now they have instructors teaching the HVAC classes that have no verified work history in the Hvac field.
I had also sent an e-mail to the Director telling them that I was concerned we are signing up students for a program that is not in place yet ,and the students are threatening to walk out and not return if we do not finish building ourHvac lab. [ I have the e-mails to prove it ]. I never have had to deal with such shrewd and an uncaring upper management staff in my life. All they care about is signing up students that qualify for free money, and lower class individuals because they are an easy mark. I was a former technician in the Hvac field and also went to a tech. school ,in my opinion it is not worth the money . They have one instructor who is a joke and knows nothing about residential systems , and only one good instructor in the whole program. Take my advice save your money and get a degree in business , or go to a real college. Maybe things will change if they get rid of the Assistant Director . And it is true ,we did have students that had multiple felonies, and most Hvac or electrical companys will not hire them because they would not pass a background check ,and they cannot take the state license test either.

I have now been dropped from my classes as of august 9th, despite my good grades and attendance. The local campus personnel were geuinely interested in helping me, but due to pressure from their corporate office, their hands were tied. I recently did receive phone calls from Kaplan University asking why I wasn't in class. I told them, because the financial aid office dropped me because of my loans. They said they would call to check with them, but I received no return call. Then I was called by an instructor asking me why I wasn't in class. I told her that I was dropped on aug. 9th due to my financial aid situation. She told me that I was still listed as being active, so I decided to show up for class the following day. When I did arrive, the head of Financial aid asked me what I was doing there, I told her that I was going to class because I was still active. She said no you can't go to class, so I proceeded with getting verification of my drop from my classes. I noted that i had a 3.9 GPA. I left and went home. I do not have any hard feelings towards the local personnel of this school, but have to admit that this whole ordeal has really rubbed me the wrong way. After seeing how all my good work and effort did not at leave many options for me at least finishing my classes. I would still owe them and was willing to work out payment plans. I was the Kaplan student that had pride in his school and used to challenge anyone who dared tarnish Kaplan's reputation. I saw Kaplan as a place where I could build my life back up and get back on track. I am not going to trash the teachers at this place because they are and will be the only reason I continue to affiliate with Kaplan.

These men and women are experts in the subjects they teach, because they themselves have worked in these fields. I will however say that when I do start back, none of my friends from class will be there, they will have graduated. It will be strictly business, since this school is being strictly business with me. I don't want to participate in anything that has nothing to do with getting my certificate. This includes the little potlucks, ice cream socials, Cav's rallies, skating socials, field trips. I am now strictly business from this point on with Kaplan. I urge all of you who are considering to go here to do your research first. Make sure the field you are trying to get into is what you really want to do and make sure that this school is actually capable of at least getting your foot in the door. If you find that it is not what you want to do.

Please do not enroll, because Kaplan is a business first. Kaplan will get it's money you owe them. Also, if you have issues with financial aid from the past, make sure you settle them first. It is very depressing to be enrolled in class and doing well only to be dropped from your classes because of financial aid issues. To all you former kaplan students on here, I truly feel your pain and anguish at this point. I want s****.>

Also this School is so ridiculous that most of the students in the programs, upon completion are only offered 9 dollar an hour to 10 dollar an hour jobs. The Career services lady is so caught up into herself that she had came into our classes on 2 separate occassions and stated that our instructors were like our bosses and if she needed electrician work she was going to ask them who was the most dependable. This lady really doesn't do her job properly because we have had 3 career days at the school and so far all I have seen is temporary employment services.

Having a job already that pays 10 dollars an hour I have decided that attending these career days at the school are a waste of my time. If you are considering going to this school just be ready to feel like you are back in High school again and be prepared to be disappointed. They have people attending this school because they are only interested in profit who don't even belong there. Also if it is the Electrician program you are interested in Just know that you have to work an additional 5 years for an accredited electical firm or person to be able to get licensed.

Also you must have 500,000 dollars insurance, no felonies, you also have to know the NEC code inside and out. You are not told that after completing this program at Kaplan, your certificate means nothing. You have to basically find someone who is already licensed to be able to do electrical work and getting into the places and unions that have to do with this trade you need at least 2 years experience. This whole experience has been nothing but a hustle. But however if it is just a knowledge of the basics you are looking for there are some exceptional instructors at this school who are genuinely interested in teaching you and have the knowledge other than that you are on your own when you graduate.
