I spoke to a Lady in the admitting office about an Online Bachelor's Degree program
for the 2003 -2004(around this time) school year.
We spoke about 3 times then the next time we spoke she said,
I would not have to pay back the loan until after I finished the class.
I was surprised, because I'd never heard of that.
Anyway, it was only like $90 dollars to start with the application process.
I continued with my studes for about a year, when I started receiving a
bill for $200 every month.
I was only able to pay my rent at the time with my $9.00 an hour job,
so I was forced to not attend anymore.
I looked at the amount owed, my balance was no more than $12,000;
yesterday I was on credit karma reviewing my credit report and these are the figures
I see, which is what they are saying I still owe now ...
$7,114 to collection agency ECMC
$4.892 to collection agency ECMC
$4,572 to collection agency ECMC
$3,048 to collection agency ECMC
Now, I'm Not a math genius or anything; but I believe this add up to over $8,000 more
than when I stopped attending.
I smell a fat rat.
I didn't even get any books with this online class, only like 3 or 4 paperback books.
There should be something done about this.
This is ridiculous.
Has anyone been in a similar situation, and is there any information like web addresses
which pertain to getting this information removed off my record?
I know odf the regular(what they tell the public) ways ...
like requesting forgiveness, however, I really don't think that would work.
ANY INFORMATON is GREATLY APPRECIATED
THANK YOU.

I wouldn't call myself a genius, but I AM pretty smart about these things because I've worked in higher education all my adult life.
I am well aware of the complaints about Kaplan and that's why I always recommend that students seek out another school. These for-profit schools are making a killing off students who don't know any better.
ECMC is the company that services your students loans. So it's not Kaplan that's adding in the extra $8000. That's the interest that has accrued since 2004 when you stopped attending school and entered repayment status.
My last question is, why do you think this debt should be removed from your record? You attended school and probably received a refund of excess loans during the semester. You KNEW you owed the money and you didn't pay it back. The debt is fair, and the reporting is fair.
It's time to man up and face your responsibility like the rest of us.

One important piece of information is missing - who was sending the bill for $200? Did it come from the school or the student loan company?
When you enrolled, your student loans were deferred. You don't have to pay them back until 6 months after you complete school. As long as you're enrolled, the loans remain in a deferred status. Once you leave school you have a six-month grace period, then enter repayment status.
If this was really in 2003-2004 (not a typo?) then interest was accruing on the unsubsidized loans while you were in repayment status.
Typically, if you default on your student loans the government can keep any tax refund you might be entitled to. So I'm wondering if the 2003-2004 is really 2013-2014...? Otherwise you would have known before now that you were in default.
In any event, you owe the money. Pay up.

However, that wasn't a typo. I attended the school for about a year and a half from 2003. I read another complaint about this school and they were saying the $200 was for internet access. You were right about that part it was coming from another source. However, that still doesn't explain why I was charged an extra $8,000
THANK YOU FOR YOUR INPUT. I guess you'd have to read about the fraudulent practices of KAPLAN to get the just of my issue, which is they do charge falsely, even though the $200 dollars was explained.
