When I had initially called to inquire about attending the university they began to ask why I wanted to attend the university.  Then they used my reason to motivate me to sign up and told me that I could attain and reach my goals by attending their online university.  I attended the university and received my Associates Degree in Legal Studies and after speaking with a counselor decided that it may not be enough to obtain employment and enrolled in the Bachelors program.  After more than half of my degree was complete I was informed that I ran out of funding and had to find my own funding in order to finish my Bachelors degree.

I was attending school as a disabled student who was receiving Social Security benefits.  They understood and knew that I was determined to finish my degree and pursue my dreams and encourage my children to continue their education.  I was led to believe that I could obtain that degree with student loans but that was not enough and now I have debt that I cannot pay because I cannot get anyone to even look at my resume and have been told that they are not accredited.  I was lied to and am very upset that they lied to me and used influence to get me to enroll into a program that they knew would never allow me to receive gainful employment in the field.

I'm a little confused. You say you are receiving SSD. If you are continuing your education so that you can pursue a career (I'm assuming as a paralegal) than you must be healthy enough to work. So how can you collect SSD?

Secondly, Kaplan sems to have an AAS degree in Paralegal Studies which prepares you to sit for the national exam. This should be sufficient for you to get an entry level position.

Third, students should take more responsibility for learning about their financial aid, because this seems to be the one area about which most college students complain. You are entitled to "x" amount of aid per year, up to a maximum set by the Department of Education.  You need to look at the tuition costs and determine if the amount of aid you can be awarded will be enough to cover the cost of your degree. Most colleges will provide this information (it's the law I think). However, the cost of your degree, and the amount of aid you receive, can vary every semester based on the number of credits you take, and whether you drop or withdraw from a class.  It can be tricky, so educate yourself first.

Good luck!  I look forward to hearing your response.
