Beware of Kaplan University on-line programs. I would like to know of any pending legal actions agienst Kaplan form predatory practices. Due to Kaplans financial aid practices, I was unable to compleate my BA. The refused to allow me to complete my program 1 semister from graduating. They told me that I needed to pay 5000.00 out of pocket plus the cost of the last semister. Their excuse was that I had ran out of financial aid. My advisor failed to warn or tell me that I was out of aid, I only found out when I was locked out of the system. 100% failure on their part. Now I'm stuck without a NA, and a loan thats due and the inability to finish school because Kaplan won't release my transcripts until I pay them the $ 5000.00
I was just turned down a promotion that would have paid me $ 90.000 because I didn't complete my degree. My career is over and ruined. Their incompetance has cost me everything.

I too am a victim of Kaplan university. After completing my first term, getting a 4.0 and being on the Dean's list, I was told that I could take a third class at no additional charge to help further my studies sooner. Well not only did they charge me for the third class, after withdrawing before the time frame allotted, I was charged for the entire semester. I would love to be apart of any petition or class action lawsuit. I am disabled, on a fixed income and I refuse to pay an institution that lies to people to get their money

I must agree with the original rebuttal. This is a case of "What you don't know WILL hurt you" and you have no grounds for a lawsuit. There are limits as to how much you can get in terms of Pell grants and student loans. Financial Aid is not meant to last forever. Unfortunately, a for profit college can charge some pretty big tuition bills, so you should've investigated how much aid you were qualified to receive and how long it would've lasted.
I know Kaplan offers some alternative loans that can help pay off your outstanding balance and finish your last semester. You gotta get that balance paid off or they will not release your transcripts.

Unfortunately, you have no basis for a lawsuit. This is a good case of "you don't know what you don't know" (but should).
There are limits to the amount of aid that can be awarded from student loans. Once you reach that limit you pay out of pocket. Because these online schools can charge whatever they want, it's up to the student to determine what the cost of his education will be, and how long those loans will last. The fact that they didn't tell you all this is sneaky and misleading, but not illegal.
As for your transcripts, all schools will do the same thing. If you owe a balance they won't release them. There isn't really a way around that except to pay what you owe.
