Purchased a Coton de Tulear puppy on June 7, 2006 and took delivery on June 9, 2006. Cost of this rare breed was $1,800.00. Per my contract with this breeder I had my pup spayed on 9/6/06. I sent several emails requesting the registration papers and each time the breeder emailed me to ask the pup's birthdate (3/13/06) and dam (Punkie).
I finally received the papers on 9/30/06, almost 4 months after our transaction. The puppy's birthdate was listed as 5/4/06, not the correct date of 3/13/06. The delivery date was listed as 7/10/06, not the correct date of 6/9/06. Additionally, the dam's name and registration number was incorrect.
When I emailed Kathy Mayhall to request corrections, she asked me to just submit the paperwork as is, stating, "You know what dog you have". She further stated it was "too much trouble" for her to correct the papers since she'd have to do it for the entire litter.
When I insisted that, for the price I paid I expected correct paperwork, Ms. Mayhall accused me of trying to "hurt" her. Apparently my refusal to file fraudulent paperwork offended her.
Further, her site indicated that my puppy's dam had delivered yet another litter of puppies in September, six months after my puppy was whelped. Either she is overbreeding or she is misrepresenting the lineage of her puppies.
After I threatened to call the AKC and file a complaint, she advised she would correct the paperwork and get it to me.
It is now almost the end of January, 2007. I have not received the papers for my dog and Ms. Mayhall has not answered any of my emails, in fact when I check on the status, it appears she deletes them without reading them.
I have contacted the AKC and they are very concerned about this. This afternoon I faxed them 24 pages of documentation and copies of our email correspondence.
All I want are the corrected AKC registration papers for my dog.

Getting What You Paid For
AUTHOR: Ashleigh - (U.S.A.)

It's very clear that the original poster paid for a dog with AKC papers, albeit limited registration papers. Without them, she has no way of knowing whether or not the dog she paid for is a mutt or a purebred (although AKC papers are not always a guarantee that they are purebred since there are dishonest breeders).
The limited registration still allows her to enter the dog in AKC events (with the exception of conformation). And before someone says that she could get an ILP number for her dog, the OP didn't pay for the dog expecting to have to then go out and get an ILP number. For $1800, she deserves her correct paperwork.
Also, submitting fraudulent paperwork is a big deal. The breeder can lose her privilege to register future dogs with the AKC if she's found to be doing this. It could also void the entire litter's paperwork if this litter has false information on the paperwork. A good breeder would want to correct these mistakes as soon as possible.

Wasting your time and others"AKC ISSUE"

We are puppy parents from Canyon Hills pups. They do an awesome job of providing healthy pups to families. You have a healthy puppy that is a PET. Papers are for breeders.
It is my understanding that this is an AKC issue, and it is being worked on. Occasionally AKC has a mix up with paperwork and that is the case here. Canyon Hills would not do anything to deny you your piece of paper! For now GET OVER IT! Love your baby and move on to real life. $1800 is not a huge price for a Coton by the way. Sounds like you got a deal.

Not Pertinent to This Complaint

Anna and Bill,
I am thrilled you're satisfied with your experience. However, you received the papers for your pups and they were apparently correct (I imagine they were, anyway). I have not. Kathy asked that I just submit the paperwork even though there were glaring errors, telling me it would take too much effort to correct them.
If you purchased one car and received the title to another, you'd want the error corrected, would you not? This is no different. I paid $1800 for my pup. I expect the paperwork to be correct.
After going back and forth, Kathy agreed to make the necessary changes, however, since that time (11/2006) she has refused to respond to my emails asking her for updates; in fact she started deleting my messages without reading them, hoping I would go away. My only alternative was to file a complaint with the AKC.
We all have our problems in life. My husband died after a lengthy bout with cancer. I was his only caregiver. I was widowed two weeks before I took delivery of my pup and she has helped my healing process immensely. Kathy Mayhall's handicap does not absolve her of responsibility to her buyers. She is a breeder and there are inherent duties that follow, not the least of which is to provide her customers with correct paperwork in exchange for the funds she collects for her puppies. Refusing to do so is a complete disservice to those buyers who purchased pups from this particular litter. Further, it has put her standing with the AKC in jeopardy.
I asked Ms. Mayhall to do the right thing... she has refused. Such a simple thing as making the corrections could have avoided all this.
Best regards,
Carol

Yes... for my Cupboard

Whether or not I can or cannot show or breed my dog is immaterial. It's a matter of principal and validation that I have gotten what I paid for. That included AKC Foundation Stock papers. There are too many so called breeders of the Coton de Tulear who are ripping people off with Maltese/Bichon mixes. End of story.
