In August 2006, our family was tasked with moving East. I initially contacted Moving Star at 1-877-916-6683 and spoke with Mey. She was accommodating and patient as I began explaining that I needed the movers to pack and move my Mother's belongings (whose house is located 150 feet from our house), and that we would have some furniture items that could be loaded from our house as well.

We kept a running inventory online and she was very good at letting me know when the price increased, etc. and that it was an educated estimate of the total weight.

June 2007, We have found a house in Virginia and final preparation begins still in contact with Mey and updating inventory online all this is through email.

July 14, 2007 Moving Day Moving Star truck shows up (cardboard sign on side of truck stating King Van Lines) red flag. Only one of five persons speak English. They go to work and continue working

Note: They told us we could pack the drawers with items as they would put moving/packing belts around to keep items inside asked that we do not put sharp objects just in case. When they began packing, the movers took ALL items out of furniture and packed it in boxes adding not only weight, but numbers to original estimate(this has not yet come up as a point of argument, but felt need to include this information, as I'm certain it will come up in dispute.)

July 15, 2007 1:30 AM movers are done. Claim the weight is over the limit ( I do not own any weighing equipment- maybe truck weighs it for them. No chance explained our situation with online inventory with Isaac (amazingly available to movers at 1:30 AM on a Sunday morning) - Isaac finally said we could go
if we pay a check for $2,100.00. Signed and given a blue copy that had a balance due of $2,100.00. (They had written in a $10,500.00 total, which I marked through and initialed)

Again, the balance due was $2,100.00 on this form. I asked them if they needed the inventory I had been filling out and they acted as if they could no longer comprehend any English.

July 17 We arrived at our house and contacted Moving Star regarding delivery of our furniture. Was told the the weight was doubled and that they would keep our furniture at Uncle Bob's storage on Manana(?) Drive in Dallas until we sent them more money. Contacting Moving Star in CA daily, with difficulty getting a call back. Spoke with Linda and Jenny(?), both confirming that they would deal with Isaac.

July 21 Isaac stood firm on not releasing our furniture from Uncle Bob, so we authorized $2,400 to be deducted from my husband's credit card to set our furniture free from Uncle Bob.

July 23 - 29 After calling Moving Star daily and finally being told on Tuesday that they were sure the furniture was on the truck and coming East. Said driver should be contacting us we never heard from him until Sunday, July 29th. We repeatedly asked and were told by Linda and Jenny that the total due at delivery was $57.48. We never got an email or fax confirming this total due.

July 29 A Russian man and a Houston, TX man showed up Sunday around 9 AM with our furniture. He presented us with a penned in total of $3,306.00 saying he would not/could not unload our furniture until we paid him. We contacted Moving Star in CA who was not open(or anyone available) on Sunday. Isaac, however, was available and stood firm. He ordered them to drive away, saying that he would add $750.00 for overnight holding of our furniture, which would make it over $4,000.00 if we waited until morning.

Our furniture had been truly taken hostage and was being ransomed. I finally gave them my credit card and authorized the withdrawal. Finally, they unlocked the doors of the van and unloaded our furniture.

They were not professional, but were courteous as they unloaded a curio cabinet with shattered glass (which had glass falling out onto the driveway and into the garage, which they never attempted to pick up). As the Russian set up a bed, he asked for books to balance the footboard, which had a wooden piece completely ripped off. Never apologized, just took the books so he could complete the task and leave. This is just a few examples of the unloading experience.

July30 My husband made one more attempt to get them to fax or email the $57.48 total that they still claimed was all we owed, but we've never seen the document.
We Called Capital One and got transferred to a department Investigative Solutions(?). We put ourselves in their hands as we filed a dispute on the $3306. Dispute is pending.

It's Unfortunate - But Cap 1 isn't goint to be of help.

It is unlikely Capital One is going to be of much help. From what you said, you authorized the deduction of the $3,306 and since their contract allows them to do this to you, there's not much you can do since everyone abided by the terms of their contract (yes, their contract...).

What you may not have figured out is that when you were talking to Moving Star, you weren't talking to the mover. You were talking to a BROKER. A BROKER does not move your items. The mover is the one who moves your stuff, and once the mover shows up - the BROKER'S responsibility ends. Your calls to them once the scam started were a waste. All the broker does is set you up for the scam that is going to occur.

I would try pursuing this in a different direction:

1. If they billed you by weight, contact the mover and get copies of the Certified Weight Tickets. If they don't have them, I would contact the Department of Transportation and have the DOT force the mover to give you tickets. If they actually never weighed the shipment, you can at least have some fun with them and make certain the DOT fines them back to the Stone Age.

2. If they billed you by cubic foot, you may wish to contact a lawyer because the Feds don't allow non-binding cubic foot moves any longer. You may also wish to have your lawyer work with the DOT to fine the mover, as well as see if the court will enforce the recently passed legislation on the elimination of non-binding cubic foot moves.

Finally - never use the internet to find a mover. Get the Yellow Pages and find a major moving company. The industry is filled with too many scammers to depend on anyone other than a major carrier.
