I applied to move in to an apartment which uses Kroll Factual Data to screen tenants. I was told to contact Kroll when my application was turned down. Kroll informed me everything on my application passed except for the criminal background check. They told me (and the apartment complex) I was a convicted felon, and that I was arrested for burglary and theft in Missouri. I explained to them I have never been to Missouri and asked how they run the criminal background check. They stated the background check is run by FIRST NAME, LAST NAME and YEAR OF BIRTH only! I have a VERY common name and I asked them to compare the information they found about the person in Missouri with my credit and employment history. They refused and said they have a process they follow and I need to fax a copy of my social security card and driver's license so they can start a "dispute claim." I did that a week ago and hadn't heard back so I called today and was told "we contacted the courts in Missouri and it takes a while. We legally have 30 days." This is a ridiculous way to practice business. I have called Kroll a few times during this ordeal (I get a different person each time) and the reps usually seem somewhat polite at first but when I ask questions they become very short and repeat the same general statements I listed above. One of the times I called the woman who answered was very rude and even ended by hanging up on me. I asked to have a refund when my name is cleared but they told me they don't bill me they bill the apartment complex, which gives them another reason to not rush in fixing their mistake and pocket my $40 for their sloppy work inaccurate.
