My family and I stayed at the LaQuinta Inn at 8484 Abercorn in Savannah, GA.  After each trip, I check my credit card statement to make sure there are no issues.  There were two holds placed on my card for my one night stay.  Initially when I called the Savannah location where we stayed, I was told it was because that is how debit card transactions are handled. When I explained it was a credit card and not a debit card, the rep got very short with me and gave me the corporate number to call.  I was told by LaQuinta reps that they cannot do anything about the additional hold because they have nothing to do with that it is something the credit card company does, which is not true.

When I contacted the credit card company they explained that when we checked in a hold was put on the card for the cost of the room and when we checked out, instead of the LaQuinta rep using the same transaction to charge the card with, an additional transaction was created. Because of this I had two holds placed on my card, one of which has cleared because it was released when we checked out with the room charge, and one which was not because it was the original transaction that was created.  The credit card company informed us that LaQuinta has to manually release the additional hold or it will be up to 10 business days for the charge to fall off.

When I called LaQuinta again I was told that this would be done by Wednesday.  When Wednesday came and went with no removal of the additional hold, LaQuinta reps told me there is nothing they can do because "that is how the banking system works."  I asked to speak to a manager at which time I was told one was not available and they had three business days to call me back and that was all they could do.

The following day the manager from the Savannah location contacted me.  She again stated that there was not an additional hold and if there was, then it was something the credit card company did and if I wanted to, I could call my credit card company and conference call her.  I did exactly that.

I explained to a manager at the credit card company what had happened.  She explained that the second hold had indeed occurred for the same reasons as we were originally told by the first credit card rep.  She conferenced the manager at LaQuinta and explained the same thing I had been explaining the same way and all of a sudden, no problem the manager released the hold.

Does it really take all of this nonsense to get this accomplished?

Well it is true when you check into a hotel, the credit card system does NOT tell the difference between a debit card and a credit card.  It usually authorizes a hotel for the entire length of stqy, plus taxes and maybe even a % for incidentals.

Sound like the problem was, when you checked out the clerk should have used the original authorization number and didn't.  There by creating a 2nd authorization.  It really does take 7-10 days AFTER you check out, for the unused amount to go back onto your card, but it will happen.  The employees are correct, that it is a bank-to-bank thing, once you check out, the hold will release.  Some hotel managers might fax off a letter to help push through the process, but you would have to supply them with info about your account.
