In April this year my family and I visited NYC and one of the shops, Lafnac Digital Computers, we visited on West 42nd street appears to be running a scam that you may be interested in.

We were sold a Pocket Projector that we were told was hot in our country, that Qantas staff were buying up and reselling for profit at home.

On our return we found that the projector is not worth $50 never mind the $1800 we paid.

They are clearly targeting tourists, luring them in with good prices and then up selling other useless items.

We are seasoned travelers and would not be ripped off by street vendors or other such obvious scams - this is though a shop on a busy street in a high traffic area looking legitimate.

Not something I would imagine NYC would be proud of.

I see this company appears on other sites where people claim to have been ripped off in just the same way we have.  Smooth talking (and we are not nave travelers but this was beyond the usual) and inflated prices.  In retrospect I remember that it is a well oil machine (and in fact I joked with the guy, Giovanni, who served us)  - one is a look out, one is the lurer, one is the closer, each I would imagine has their specialty country and the lies flow from there.

I see reports have appeared on this site for many many years and still they are in business!!!  How is that possible.  Does the city of New York not care that tourists are being ripped off??!!

I am so not surprised to see your post about this company.  I KNEW this was a scam and that they used the airline staff story just shows without a doubt that it is.  I reported it to the New York Department of Consumer Affairs.  When they contacted these crooks they were told that the product was good and worth what we paid (nearly US$2000!!!) but that they would give us a US$300 refund as a gesture of good faith.  I tried to explain to the consumer affairs people that the only reason they were giving me a small refund was because they were guilty and wanted to get all of us off their back.  Unfortunately this was as far as the DCA were prepared to take it and so I was forced to accept this very small refund.
I have attached the info of the person I dealt with and maybe if you are able to get hold of her too then more action can be taken on behalf of all of us who have been ripped off.

Lafnac scam for iSonic Beamers

AUTHOR: Alex - (Netherlands)

POSTED: Saturday, February 12, 2011

We were also scammed last week for exactly the same (a pocketsize beamer which according to them has a value of 4000 dollars so we got it for a 'bargain' at 950 dollars incl.battery). The next day when we wanted to return it, we were not able to get a cash refund. This we expected so we wanted to trade it for another product.Suddenly the products were double the price than the day before or they were not in stock. Since they do not put prices on the products (only prices that are 8x the value), there is not much you can do. The friendliness also disappears very fast. They told us we can return it next time we visit but of course did not want to put that in writing so this claim is totally worthless.

We travel a lot and normally don't fall into these scams, but as you mentioned, due to the store and the location, we just did not notice until we were back in our hotel. We were sold the beamer exactly the same way,but then with the story that it is the most popular product with KLM staff them (we are from Holland).I will also file a separate report about this, I am shocked to see how many complaints there are of this company and they are still in business.

Does anybody know what we can do against this? Publishing isn't enough, so many tourists just pass by and the shop looks decent so they can keep on going on with their scams. We would really like to take further action, but are not familiar with American law.

In Holland there are laws about misinformation, is there anything like this in US?
