The link above if still active is just an example of Laird Noller Ford and their Bait and Switch Business Practices.

My daughter found this advertisement of a 2005 used ford focus for 1,499. I called the dealership before submitting a carfax qoute on the VIN number suspecting flood damage. Instead a salemans told me the price was a misprint but he had another ford focus with the same options, no warranty that was a 2003 at $9.999. I told him I was not interested and asked when the price would be updated on the website. He chuckled and stated his store has had many people coming in and inquiring about the car (duh) and he has attempted to have the price fixed. He gave me the excuse that the website manager would not return his calls...that they haven't responded. It only takes a few seconds to update a webpage. I stated that I believed the advertisment to be a classic bait and switch and that I would be watching the website for an price update. I also notified the better business bureau in North East Kansas.

I guess I take unethical business practices personally.

C'mon, Cyber....

...did you really believe that you could buy a late-model Focus (or a late-model anything) for $1,499?

I know car dealers get a bad rap, and many deserve the knocks they get. But this sounds like an honest mistake, NOT a bait-and-switch. Yes, the old bait-and-switch uses the same principle, but at least usually uses a more believable number, not one such as this that is so low it can't possibly be right.

No person with any realistic expectations would hope to see a vehicle of this model year for such a low purchase price. Now, say the price had been written ON the car when you arrived at the lot, that might be a different story. And I do recall a car lot many years ago advertising on TV about a car they'd sell for just "xxxx bananas", trying to be entertaining by using slang.

A customer actually brought that number of bananas to the lot, and sued in court because the lot refused the sale. The customer won that one. But your situation is so extreme that no rational thinking person would believe such a deal to be real. And I'm not a lawyer, nor am I in the auto business in any way, shape, or form.

I think the dealership's response was measured and professional, not to mention accurate. Many businesses of all types contract out their website work. This is a classic case of a person wanting something for nothing and throwing realistic expectations to the wind.

I wonder if any of those other customers the salesman referred to was suing? My guess is no, because while hope springs eternal, in the end if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. They accepted this, while you can not. It was an honest mistake. I wonder what you would do if you were on the other end of this, take a loss of many thousands of dollars?

I seriously doubt it, Cyber.

Laird Noller Ford Response

AUTHOR: Jolene - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, May 08, 2006

Laird Noller Ford employs an outside agency to list our pre-owned vehicles on the web. The 2005 Ford Focus was inadvertently listed as $1,499, when in reality it should have been listed as $14,995. The number five was mistakenly left off the end of the price. As soon as we knew about this error, we contacted our web agency, and they corrected the problem.

Laird Noller Ford has been in business in Topeka Kansas since 1960. If you would ask anyone who has done businss with us in the past 46 years, they would tell you that we are honest, and that we take care of our customers. Our customers are the reason we are here!

If you have any questions, please give us a call. We will be glad to assist you.

Thank you.
