Lakeland C-D thinks you're so stupid you can't see thru this VERY OBVIOUS con-game. They fully admit they are involved in this scam thru their newspaper ad of August 1, 2008 in "The Ledger". Here's exactly how the bogus, add-on, phoney fee scam works...the dealer, in this case Lakeland C-D advertises what they represent as a price for a car except, in reality it is NOT the real price! They've LIED TO YOU even before you come thru their door! They make up the rest of the price with a BOGUS, add-on PHONEY FEE with an official sounding name because they think you are too stupid to figure this out. In this case, its $498 "Documentation Fee". This is a SCAM which has spread in the car business like flies on raw sewage. What would you expect from slime? But in the Lakeland area, this place isn't the only store where this CON-GAM. Central Pontiac-Buick calls their BOGUS Fee a "$299 Dealer Fee"; Jenkins Lincoln-Mercury scams you with a "$499 'Administrative Fee'"; Jenkins Nissan plays the same CON-GAME with a "$599 Dealer Fee" which they say represents, among other things, pre-delivery services which the manufacturer already paid them for!

Come on people, you don't need this SCAM. Avoid these places. Don't be a victum. Remember, they think you are so-o-o stupid you can't figure this out.
If this was a legitimate way to conduct business, you would be seeing this in other sectors of retail. For example, you'd order a cup off coffee at McDonald's and be charged a 50 cent administrative fee. It doesn't happen because most other areas of retail operate with much more INTEGRITY and HONESTY than the car business. "Disclosure" is the excuse used to defend this SLIMEBALL practice. In other words, since the have it in their ad, that justifies the CON-GAME. No it doesn't.

common sense

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

Well MR. JIM.. old posts with bad advice...

Candidly - they can charge me $10,000 in processing fees - as long as the total price I am paying is less than any other dealer's total cost....

But other than that .....

Simply Don't Pay It

AUTHOR: Karl - (U.S.A.)

This isn't new. Add ons like the famous ADP (additional dealer payment) or similar have been used by dealers ever since price stickers appeared. All you have to do is laugh and tell the dealer that you aren't paying the fee. If the dealer refuses to sell you the car then tell him goodbye. The dealer tried and he lost. There are plenty of dealers. Just don't deal with ones that try a charge a ridiculous fee. The dealer isn't at fault in the least for trying to make as much money as possible. The buyer is at fault for not walking.
