If you encounter someone involved in "Landmark", run...seriously. This is a cult and basically a mind control factory interested in only one thing...your money.  One of my friends went to the "Forum" and soon she basically had no life at all except for "Landmark".   Every spare second of her time was spent there, I believe she had to pay them when she volunteered and she basically convinced every single friend and family member she had to attend (as "Landmark"is the only thing that matters according to their philosophy).

On her urging i attended the three day Forum and was not only amazed at the sensory deprivation (three days of sitting in a basement in uncomfortable chairs, very close to the person next to you with no food, except on breaks, and dim, depressing lighting), but also by the fact that the goal is to have "breakthroughs" (uncovering traumatic past experiences) in a very unsafe environment...as I am pretty sure none of the "leaders" had any mental health education.  I found the entire experience to be the epidomy of irresponsibility on their part as the human psyche can be fragile when it comes to past trauma and there is a reason licensed professionals have licences.  I also found the "leader" to be somewhat abusive when challenged.  For example, a woman stood up at the microphone and said her husband had some skepticism about Landmark and the Leader replied "we'll then he doesn't love you".   Also, after hours of droning on about "The Landmark Forum" a few of the attendees went to the wall to just stretch and the "Leader" said in the most derogatory tone "come back here and sit down!".

I attended the "Forum" a few years ago, but I am writing this now as I just watched the Scientology documentary.  Aside from Landmark not mentioning aliens and I never got punched in the face, Landmark and Scientology seem to be very similar.  Once you go to the Forum, then you are urged and badgered to go to the next level ($700 at the time....and more sitting in a chair) and badgered to invite your friends and family members...and I don't use the word "badgered" lightly...for they had your cel phone number and would stalk you, asking if you had "invited" anyone yet.  They try to make sure you drop the cash for the next level because in the next level is the only way to "get it".

Landmark has a cult like vocabulary, they try to convince you that nothing else in the world matters if you do not attend Landmark, not church, yoga, therapy, career, family, God....nothing....none of it matters if you are not involved in Landmark, it is the only solution for your life and there is nothing else.   They attack any "enemy" and are quite sue happy of anyone who calls them a cult.  They will try to squeeze every dime out of not only you, but your loved ones, family members, friends, neighbors, co-workers, etc.   And after doing research, I realized half of the stories our "Leader" told us were just lies...flat out lies.

Takes what it gives you then run

AUTHOR: Tina - (USA)

I agree with several points of your review. Luckily, I can still say "No." I did get a lot out of it. It gave me the tools i wanted to take control of my life in a constructive way. Now i can have conversations with people and not get all bunched up and ready to fight for my opinion. I was able to go to the Forum and pick apart the flaws that i created that cause me problems in life. Like handling confrontation, preventing people feeling like they have to think about how to talk to me and vice versa. I don't get a knot in my gut anytime someone doesn't like me or doesn't agree with me. I was pretty stuck in my behavior.

So, that said, if you are pretty well rounded and sensible, the forum offers some great insight into your own behaviors that you yourself will discover. They have designed a program to provoke your thinking to allow you to come to your own understanding of how you operate. And then they give you ways to Stop doing it...Now. And helps you be accountible for your choices and decisions. And how to start a repairing conversation with people you've hurt or have hurt you.

I have regained my family relationships, patched it up with an ex-boyfriend so we can be good, real friends and I am making huge strides at work with new ideas and other options to improve the company.

I can see where you use the word Cult- some people who have gone with me really dive in. I'm not a joiner by nature and I will also not be pushed into doing anything I don't want to do. But at least now I know why I won't. I get me. Now no one esle has to "deal with" me. I can stop doing that crap and just be a good person to people. It's nice. And I'm not Hook, Line and Sinker LANDMARK. I apply it to my life and the tools are pretty easy.

I did find some of the information conflicting in the Advanced course. Frankly, it bothered me coming out of that one. I waited several months before I decided to go. i worked on all of the tools they gave me the first go. I decided I wanted one more run on something else I was stuck on. For me, It did Work. I went in looking for the keys to the kingdom on my behavior and I got it. I completely got it.

I think today people are very self-focused. People have lost being neighborly, lost taking care of the elderly, lost respecting our elders, lost respect for each other. We don't even talk anymore, we text and hide behind a monitor on social media. Like now- Haha...But this brings you back to being connected to people around you through talking. I needed it. And I appreciate my learning experience with their help.

I was glad to go so that I can see how my behavior actually causes conflict with others that I don't intend. Now I can communicate with others and I genuinely feel caring about people around me. People should. I do. It gave me patience with others. That was worth it.

So if you are smart and you are ready to look at yourself and you are the type of person to resist pressure and only do what you want to do, then you won't go wrong taking the initial Landmark Forum. The benefits are healing.

The first one truly accelerates getting to your issues far faster than multiple trips to therapy or couples counseling...or doing nothing but choke it down. That's how I ended up going. Or maybe you want to turn in toward a new career? Both of those were reasons for me to go. I was lucky.

I learned how to get out of my own way and stop living on old feelings dragged around from the past that were blocking my successes.

People should exercise good judgement and know what they want out of the classes. It is tough to sit there for so long but remember, it is designed to help you get to what's bugging you. An uncomfortable schedule will certainly edge up your feelings when you aren't comfortable. HAha- I have no doubt it is by design. And also remember, you don't have to do anything you don't want to do. If you don't want to do what is asked, then don't. But be clear where you are thinking from- is it that angry voice in your head or your heart? It helps you figure that out. HAha.

I hope this helps others to understand the other side of this review. Thanks, V/R Tina
