One late evening my friends and I were barbecuing at a summer cottage. Warm weather set in and we were feeling adventurous. We were wondering what we should be up to next weekend and someone suggested that we should go to a football match. We all agreed. Indeed, why not? Next weekend we all met near the stadium one hour before the match, as was agreed, and then went to the stadium together. Inside, a lot of football merchandise was being sold – balls, T-shirts, scarfs, vuvuzelas. The weather was chilly and 10 minutes before the match it began to pour. The stadium was open and everyone got soaked – only few people had umbrellas. But that wasn’t the issue.

We couldn’t find our seats, so we addressed the girl who was helping people to find their seats. She said we should go to the second pass on her left. We went there and found our row and seats, but they were occupied. We asked the people who were sitting there to go to their own seats, as those seats were ours. But they asked us to show our tickets to them, and we asked them to do the same. It turned out that we had the same seats, but in different sectors. The girl had shown wrong seats to us.

Everyone who was close to us, and heard our conversation, wanted to help, and began to look for our sector. Then one man shouted: “They are the rival team fans!” – and pointed at our sector. Indeed, we were in the rival team sector. We panicked, half of the people stared at us, not knowing what to do. Some people were just sitting and waiting for how things would turn out. The man who shouted, hit one of us, and then his friend hit another of my friends. Of course, it all ended up in a scuffle. Some people who were near, began to drag those two men away from us.

I think we were in luck really. After all we got away with just a couple of bruises. But our mood was spoiled, of course. And we did not enjoy the game as much as we might. It was a shame the fist football match we went to together happened to be like that. Even when the game was over my friends looked dull. So, we tried to make up for that notorious evening by swimming at the sunset, in a lake that was still warm.
