I bought a ticket to Real Estate Wealth Expo from Learning Annex in 2006. The event was full of con artists selling "get rich" seminars - used false advertising and tricked thousands of people into buying them - but that's a different story. The event itself is not my focus here.

In May 2007, I received a call from Learning Annex telling me they were going to send me an email containing sign-up information for some free trial for online courses. I say I was not interested, to which the rep said it was no problem because this was a free trial and no obligation to purchase. The rep read for me my email address on file - it was accurately my current address.

I never received any email. In July, I discovered that my bank account had been charged 2x $39.95 from Learning Annex. Furious - knowing I did not authorize any purchase - I looked on the internet for the Learning Annex customer service phone number. Their entire website was down (how very convenient).

Fortunately, I got their phone number from my bank and I called. The rep Trevor (ext. 4442) was first trying to convince me this was a purchase I authorized, however after I assured him I was going to make a big deal out of this (report to investigators etc.), he promptly refunded the two charges. I assured him I did not want to see ANY future charges whatsoever from LearningAnnex EVER.

My refund should show up on my account in 5-7 days. I'll make sure to check on that, and it better be there. As a final precaution, I called my bank and asked for my credit card number to be voided and a new card issued. That's the only way to protect oneself from this shady, dishonest "company".
