I called the "Fox Run Eye Care" which is the eye doctor affiliated with Lenscrafters for an eye exam. I told the receptionist that I needed an eye exam, but that I had a medical condition (Lupus) that required the doctor check my eyes thoroughly. My insurance had said that an exam was covered so long as the doctor made the appropriate notation about checking the health of my eyes and did appropriate tests. They agreed to do the exam.

Also, their exams are $85--JC Penney, Sears and Pearle Vision are all at least $15 less. I arrived at the appt and was informed that the doctor could only perform a "routine eye exam", which was different than the medical exam to check for the Lupus. I was told that I would have to reschedule if I wanted the medical exam, and that the medical exam required a "field of vision exam" which is a brief test done along with other tests. I was also told that they would not bill to insurance, since this was a routine exam.

I called my former eye doctor on the spot (I had moved) and they told me that this doctor was being ridiculous and did not want to bill insurance. I also called my insurance company and was told to send in the receipt and a complaint, as a I was misled, and the doctor could have easily performed all tests. Even without the field of vision test, the test is considered covered due to my condition. This is the greediest and most unhelpful bunch of people I have met. I assume they are too lazy to file paperwork.

It gets worse. My prescription eded up being incorrect. The doctor went through the tests very fast and was annoyed if I asked to slow down. This is what gives mall eye doctors a bad name. What a chop shop. After, I went over to look at cheap glasses that are priced much less elsewhere. It pays to ask exactly what the doc will do ahead of time, and what tests they will not do. Ask if your insurance covers it and don't believe THEM believe your insurance!
