Hi,
My husband and I built a house with three new decks, one of which is our front porch. We chose Choice Decking from Lowe's Home Improvement. Thousands of dollars later and within months of completion mold began growing all over the decks.
We were bewildered and my husband spent approximately 50 dollars on bleach and a product suggested by the store to clean the decks. After spending one of his days off from work cleaning the decks they looked nice once again. Mind you we chose this product for the 'care free maintenance' aspect. Within three to four weeks we saw the mold growing once again.
At one point we were told by a ChoiceDeck representative that this was a problem from Connecticut to South Carolina. When we called weeks later to complain once again another representative had no idea what we were talking about. Crazy!
We called the company and the store and now we are just being ignored. This is no way to treat customers and we are very upset. This product has tainted our beautiful new home and I feel strongly that something should be done. We are open to suggestions at this point. We are hoping that someone will be able to give us some positive advice.
Thank you so much for listening.

Choice Deck - Lowes Fades Fast and Attracts Dirt

After spending thousands on our Choice Deck in a brown color - it faded unevenly to a white gray! And it did so in less than 2 months! We even matched the screws to the deck. Now we have a gray deck with brown screws.
Also, it is not maintenance free - it gets very dirty, very fast. A Lowes rep told me told power wash it or stain it. How about that. They also marked the deck down to 1/2 the cost of what we paid. According to an anonymous employee due to the deck not holding up well and fading.
I say why sell brown decking that fades to an ugly shade of gray right away. It's worthless.
The Lowes rep also told be that I should be happy because I didn't have a covered portion on my deck. If I did, any shaded portion would still be brown. Lovely. He also said that one customer has some railing on one side that is gray and on the other is brown.
For as much as we spent on this deck, we could have had stamped concrete.

mold will grow anywhere there is dampness

I am sorry to hear about the situation. But mold will grow anywhere there is dampness. Some things retard it better than others. There is nothing that it won't grow on. Sometimes it helps to use a marine quality deck stain. We are professional landscape designers. And don't use wood as a hole because no matter what there is always maintenance. Stains are the best, never paint. If moisture is a problem then use the marine stain. It is more expensive, the same material used on wooden sailing yachts. The first application is the costliest. After that it's just a yearly touch up. Must be done when it is dry and wood is dry. Use darker shades if possible. Always use the best quality you can afford.
