Read this before doing business with Louie (Luigi) Porretta - Chartered Professional Accountant, CPA, CA From one small business owner to another – get paid upfront if you’re going to do business with Louie (Luigi) Porretta ,pcpa.ca/ Louie (Luigi) Porretta contacted me on September 10th, 2014 for the purpose of writing ‘professional web directed copy’ for his new website. We spoke on September 11th and agreed to meet at 11:30 a.m. on September 18th, at which point Mr. Porretta hired me. Louie (Luigi) Porretta admitted that he was frustrated and struggling with what to say on his Home and About pages for his new website. He wanted something that spoke to his ‘real world business experience’ and ‘ability to relate to the challenges facing small business owners and assisting them in successfully managing and growing their businesses.’ More importantly, in the web copy, he wanted to underscore his belief and vision of ‘trust, ethics and leadership,’ which are three key pillars in operating a business and which are articulated and mandated by the professional association he is accredited with and represents: ICAO (Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario); CFP (Certified Financial Planner). I interviewed Louie (Luigi) Porretta extensively at our meeting and was able to capture the intent of what he wanted to communicate – at least what he thought he wanted to communicate.

Louie (Luigi) received the first draft of the 2 pages on September 28th. After numerous attempts to contact him, Louie (Luigi) finally got back to me on October 10th. He informed me that, after being hired to write 2 pages, he now only wanted one page and went on to tell me that what he received was not what he was looking for. I asked him to please explain what exactly was wrong with it. He was unable to articulate what the problem was because, as he admitted, he didn’t know what he wanted. As Louie still wasn’t sure what he wanted to say or how to say it, we agreed to go our separate ways. Louie told me to invoice him. I invoiced him for one page on October 28th, 2014.

To date, Louie has not paid and has ignored all subsequent invoice reminders and all of my attempts to reach him. Louie claims to understand small business, but his actions would lead one to believe otherwise. Stiffing small businesses is not the way to do business, Mr. Porretta. In fact, failure of clients to pay for services rendered (deadbeat clients) is one of the biggest challenges facing small business owners. It’s a very sad reality. Perhaps ignoring and cheating vendors is part of Louie’s strategy in assisting his clients to successfully manage and grow their business. One can only wonder what the professional associations he belongs to would have to say about his actions. If you plan on doing business with Louie (Luigi) Porretta lpcpa.ca/ do yourself a favor.
