Cops: Money went to Staten Island man, not Freehold Township couple's mortgage

FREEHOLD — When a Freehold Township couple hired a Staten Island man to help modify their mortgage, he ended up pocketing nearly three years worth of payments on their house instead, authorities said.

Mario Coniglione, 50, stole more than $100,000 from the couple as he asked them to redirect their monthly mortgage and escrow payments to him so he could serve as their broker, according to the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office. When the couple’s lender initiated foreclosure proceedings, Coniglione attempted to file an emergency bankruptcy petition to stay the action.

On Aug. 23, Coniglione turned himself in to face charges of theft, identify theft, forgery and falsifying or tampering with records, according to the office.

He was being held at the Monmouth County Jail on $75,000 bail. Should he post it, he must surrender his passport, according to the judge’s orders.

Anyone who may have also conducted business with Coniglione or with his company, known either as Regency Financial or Regency Consulting, should call investigators at (((REDACTED))) to determine if they may also been victimized.
