My daughter wanted to sell her parrot and posted the notice on the Pet Finder web site.
A few days later she received an email response, it was from a woman who starts her email with a history of her family, her husband and two daughters, one Mary is having a birthday party next week.
I was concerned, the grammar in the email sounded funny "We are glad to read back from you." also the willingness of the husband to pay anything "my
husband said he's capable of paying any price you name and would also
pay some kind of donation and compensation to you for the up bringing of
the pet.

File a complaint with Yahoo!

If this person is truly using a Yahoo email address, you should definitely file a formal complaint with Yahoo about this scam! They will investigate it. However, as I have discovered...in some instances...these scammers...while using what appears to be a Yahoo address...are frequently determined by Yahoo to be utilizing some different IP address and Yahoo will claim they are not able to do anything about it.
The whole mess still stinks and frankly Yahoo SHOULD close down the Yahoo address being used to route such scam email through THEIR email system! If Yahoo does NOT help you...then file complaints with the BBB and the FTC, specifically detailing Yahoo's failure to assist you in putting a stop to this scam. Be sure to save ALL of Yahoo's responses (including all the lame excuses they are likely to give you as well) to your complaint and forward them to the BBB and FTC!
Wake up Yahoo...and DO THE RIGHT THING FOR A CHANGE!

The cashier's check will be fake and it will have been made out for a much larger amount than the price of the bird. You would have been asked to take the extra money and wire it to the "shipping company" via Moneygram or Western Union.
When the bank discovers that the cashier's check is fake, the scammers will have been long gone.

The cashier's check is a tip off. This is a new technique. Still stinks of scam.
