We have been having problems with air and dirt infiltration on two patio doors. The local supplier, Warren Window and Supply, has replaced the weather-sripping and an the sliding panels. They still leaked.

The suppliers rep did a water test on the doors and said they leaked, but were within specs. After contacting Marvin Window-Door in Warroad Mn, I was told there was nothing they could do because the doors were not designed for the wind in our area. I asked them why they were being sold here if they were not designed for this area.

I haven't recieved an answer to that question. We have since went after the builder and he has agreeded to purchase to new PELLA doors at my request. I would like to know if anyone else has had a problem with Marvin Windows or Doors and hasn't recieved any help.

#1 Consumer Suggestion

Air and Dirt Infiltration on Marvin Door, To the owner of the Marvin door.

AUTHOR: J - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, March 17, 2005

To the owner of the Marvin door. You ask why the doors are sold in your area. Just like a car manufacturer makes sedans and 4-wheel drive vehicles, Marvin makes a variety of products to meet differenct environmental conditions.

On the ocean, mountain area or open field, where the home may get hit harder with wind and weather, the consumer needs to purchase the product that is rated to take the weather.

Some of the time, the right product for the environment will cost more and the decision is made on cost and not effectiveness of the product. Before purchasing your product, did you find out the DP rating of the door you bought?

Fenestration (windows and doors)manufacturers of quality products will have the DP rating information available upon request. Not all products are manufactured the same nor do they meet the requirements of every environment.

Did you have a fenestration professional help spec the door you purchased?

If this is a sliding door, you can add a sweep to the interlock that will help block air and water from infiltrating at that area.

If you have an Inswing Door - when the door is not in use, keep the Multi-point lock and/or head and foot bolts engaged so the door panels will stay in the correct position and wind will not push the panels inward allowing air and dirt to pass.

Make sure all weatherstip is in place and making contact.

If you did not purchase the correctly rated product, even when you change to PELLA, verify the WDMA rating of their door too so you do not end up with another concern and spend money for no reason.

Finally, if the weather hits that side of your home that hard, maybe you would be better served by putting a wall or stationary product in place.
