Four months after accepting collect calls from my brother-in-law I received an insane bill from these jokers.
First off, I was never made aware of the company charging me for the calls (I would like Mama Bell to come back). Second, 2 minutes should not equal $16.25 and one minute should not equal $13.98. Where do these guys get off charging that much?!?
For one week of calls (a total of 147 minutes; 16 calls) I received a bill for $521.33. An emergency should make the helping party go into debt. That is more than I pay in long distance for a year with my current carrier. When did MCI get so greedy? Are they charging this much because they are aligned with one of the bankrupt banks?
Had I known that I would be receiving such outrageous charges I would have sent him a calling card after I first heard of his dire straits.
Please let me know what is going on and what if anything can be done about this company and the fees they charge for doing nothing.

Those rates

For the rates you are describing, it sounds like your brother in law was calling you from jail/prison? They always have exhorbant rates attached to them.
If this is indeed the case, the rates are negotiated by the government with the long distance carrier. The government gets a cut of these collect calls. So your real beef is with the government, they allow these calls to be high so they get more money for the prison system.

MCI/Verizon Collect Call

My sister called me collect about a month ago from across town, maybe 2 miles away tops, when the battery in her car died. We spoke for a total of 2 minutes. Well today the bill from MCI came and I couldn't believe how much they wanted for those 2 minutes, nearly $9.00! I don't expect collect calls to be free, but $4.50 a minute? C'mon now!
To their credit, after calling MCI, they quickly agreed to settle the bill for a total of $3.50, which I find to be much more reasonable.

Hi there,
While I agree those charges are high - let me give everyoen some advise to avoid them in the future.
When someone calls you collect, you will not be getting billed by your home carrier unless that company owes the phone in which the call is placed from.
Many payphone companies are smaller and basically can charge whatever they wish. THey post the rates but I like everyone else do not think to read it.....one would think how much could it actually cost....
So please, to avoid the outragous costs, pick up that payphone, connect to an operator and ask to be transferred to an operator for the carrier of your choice. The collect call will always cost mroe than a directly dialed call from your home but if you at least got billed by your local company changes are the rates biled will be tolorable.
