I purchased an extended warranty with National Dealer Warranty handled by the parent company Mechanical Breakdown Protection, Inc. on 2/19/07. My transmission went bad on my Volkswagon Jetta '02. I filed a claim on 3/23/07.

The Repair shop that checked the car said the transmission would need to be replaced. They contacted me 3/26/07 and said the warranty company wanted them to tear the transmission down to see what part went bad and hinted at them rebuilding the transmission. They don't tear down or rebuild transmissions.

After debating with warranty the company...they said they had to know what part went bad in the transmission before paying anything, so I asked them for a company they recommend. After taking the car to a place that they recommended, the repair shop tore down the other transmission($500). They also told the warranty company it would be over $3000 for another transmission.

The warranty said they would send out an adjuster. The adjuster said that kind of problem wouldn't happen after 30 days and they tried to say it was a problem when I got the car. When I called to cancel the warranty, the rep I spoke with tried to say maybe I hadn't reached my 1000 miles yet. There was no such thing mentioned on the phone to me or my contract.

The rep tried to keep me from cancelling my warranty and even offered if I took the car to another shop maybe the warranty company could help me have the problem fixed with the transmission...but refused to put in another transmission. This was weeks after they just completely denied the claim. I had to buy a used transmission for $800 and paid $700 in labor to the repair shop for the tear down of the other transmission and the tranmission I had put in.

I got my prorated refund of $289 back...but my costs of having this car fixed was alot more. This warranty company is not to be trusted. They will get your money and everything is fine until you need something done...and they will try any kind of way to deny your claim.

Mechanical Breakdown Insurance questions to ask!!!!

AUTHOR: Erin - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, November 18, 2008

Ask who is behind the policy?
Just like your car insurance policy. If you run into a tree you just expect them to fix it back to normal. The same is true with Vehicle Service Contracts(Mechanical Breakdown Insurance.) Find out who is going to repair your vehicle when a part fails. Will you get to decide or will they pick the repair shop for you?
1. Make sure you personally understand what remaining factory warranty is still left on your personal vehicle.
No need to add more coverage if you already have an existing policy in place. Only purchase the coverage you need for protection beyond the manufacturer's warranty. After all, you paid for that coverage as well. Nothing in life is free not even factory warranties.
2. Look for companies that are teamed up with Repair shops.
For example, take PepBoys. Pepboys is a publicly traded company and they with over 588 locations. Ask yourself why would a repair shop team up with an extended warranty company? Why? Only one good reason comes to mind. THEY INTEND TO PAY THE CLAIMS. Pepboys has better things to do than to team up with a VSC provider that doesn't pay claims.
3. Make sure the Insurer (the company who is standing behind the policy) is a publicly traded company.
Reason: They have accountability toward shareholders and they can't afford bad publicity.
4. Remember Vehicle's Service Contracts are only designed to do one thing and that is to replace a part that has failed beyond the manufactures warranty.
Watch out for gimmicks like free gas, free this You as a consumer just want peace of mind for your family that if the car breaks they pay to fix it. It's just that simple. No gimmicks. You purchase a warranty for your peace of mind... So when it breaks, look for the company that does what all VSC'S or extended warranties or Mechanical Breakdown Insurance is supposed to do. Repair the car. Stay away from fake promises. Look for the company that does what it says.
