I was prescribed an at-home TENS unit for my back last year to help control my pain and muscle spasms.  Medical Necessities was the only medical supply place in Jonesboro that sold/rented TENS units.  They also had an agreement with my insurance company that the insurance company would pay 100% of the charges.

The TENS unit I was given retails for $90.  Medical Necessities charged my insurance company $45/month for 4 months.  There was a problem in the billing originally, because Medical Necessities sent the invoice to the wrong place, and therefore did not get paid for the first couple of months.  Instead, they started sending ME invoices.  I had to call and get everything straightened out with my insurance company as well as call Medical Necessities back in order to give them the right company name and address to send the invoices.

After the 4 months that Medical Necessities got paid by my insurance company, I called to tell my insurance company that the TENS unit only retailed for $90 (I priced them online), and that since they had already paid over $135 for the unit, that it should be paid for.  The customer service representative agreed with me and said that the unit had been purchased and that it was mine.

Shortly thereafter, I lost my health insurance due to an on-the-job injury sustained by my husband.  My health insurance was through his job and we could not afford to pay for COBRA after he could no longer work.

Ever since then, I have gotten a statement from Medical Necessities every month for $45.  I have called them and written them letters stating that my insurance company informed me that the unit had been purchased and that I would not have to owe anything EVER. I have called my insurance company to make sure that I was correct, and have asked my insurance company to contact Medical Necessities in order to straighten this situation out.   I have explained to Medical Necessities REPEATEDLY that this unit retails for only $90 online and that if I continue to pay them, they will have received over $200 for a $90 TENS unit.  They have threatened to turn me over to collections if I do not continue to pay them $45/month until THEY consider the unit purchased.

Medical Necessities is not the only medical equipment company in Jonesboro; they are just the only ones that carry TENS units.  I would advise against using them for ANY type of Durable Medical Equipment, and if you need a TENS unit, take the prescription from the doctor and look online!  Order one from another company, even if you have to pay shipping; in the long run, it will cost you less time, money, and a LOT less hassle!

I would not recommend Medical Necessities in Jonesboro, Arkansas to ANYONE!

Consider contacting your state's Department of Insurance Fraud

AUTHOR: Opana - (U.S.A.)

Please consider contacting your state's Department of Insurance Fraud or Department of Health.  You are being ripped off.  I am sure you are not the only one.  DME (durable medical equipement) is an area that is fraught with consumer rip offs in the Medicare and Medicaid population.  My thought is that this is also occuring with you as well.

Good luck.
