The problems started when the new telemarketer told me that Mentoring of America was a John Beck company. As it turns out, they are not a John Beck company. There is an element of dis-trust out of the gate based on other complaints I had heard. But being soft hearted, I gave the benefit of the doubt.

The next problem was that I was advised upfront not to explore the "property vault" until my mentor tells me to. Weeks later my mentor said he didn't understand why I was told that. At $1,060 an hour, it's important to be given accurate information to prevent wasting expensive time.

I think the next problem was due to what was expected based on all the hype of the infomercial versus what I was told by the mentor. The infomercial leads you to believe you can pick up houses left and right, no problem, and re-sell them for hugh profits immediately. What I was told by the mentor was to stay away from the houses because they probably have liens and it would take a long time to work out the problems and make money on them. I was told to stick to tax delinquent vacant land in Arkansas and work through the county offices.

After spending exorbitant time checking with the county offices, it was determined that it's not the counties that handle the tax auctions in Arkansas. The counties forfeit the property to the state and the state handles the disposition of the proprty at that point. After wading through the old left over vacant land muck in Arkansas. I have learned a great deal from the State Commisioner's office in Arkansas not the mentor. I've had to correct the mentor numerous times due to his unfamiliarity with the tax sale process in Arkansas. I even forwarded emails from the state to him to convince him he was incorrect only to wind up wasting more precious time listening to him argue the point.

I was sent on a lot of search and discover, trial and error missions and when I reported results, the mentor would always say, Oh yeah, that's what I already told you last session, remember? Always putting words in my mouth and expecting me to believe him. What a gig. I pay them $1,060/hr,(not including time I could have been paid for doing other things) to mentor them.

I was told I could get free title searches. However, the mentor expected me to find out how. I spent another week or so calling county assessor's, checking with the state, working online. None of it checked out. He couldn't give any online sources.

I sent numerous emails on numerous days that were never responded to. When I asked why they weren't responded to, the mentor said he never got them even though I never received an online failure to deliver notice. Then he said their "server" was down. I guess It was down all that week, because he still never responded until I called him on it at the next week's session. Then he told me he sent me emails finally responding to these inquiries that were never received by me. When I followed up, I got no answer, which was ok because I wouldn't believe it anyway at this point.

I told my mentor I was very frustrated with this process. He just said, don't get frustrated, you can always continue calling us for information over the next 6 months free of charge. It's totally up to you. I thought that was the perfect scapegoat for this company. Don't address the issues, just lay it off on the 6 free month deal as if I would want to subject myself to more of the same treatment.

After about the second session when I realized my mentor didn't know the Arkansas process, I advised him that they advertised that they had a success story in Arkansas by the name of "Drew G". During the last session I asked my mentor if he had ever contacted Drew to inquire as to how to be successful in Arkansas, to save us all some time and effort, and he didn't remember who I was talking about. He said they have had thousands of success stories in Arkansas. If that's true, then why isn't he familiar with the process here? At that point, I just was sick and tired of all the lies and misrepresentations. I told my mentor that I wanted to end this because of all the mis-communication. I was sick of it. There goes $3,700 down the drain.

Refund info for Bob

Here is the bottom line. If Mentoring of America failed to tell you that you had 3 days to call back and cancel for a full 100% refund, you have now a full 90 days in which you are entitle to a refund as a violation of Utah's Telephone Fraud Prevention Act. Mentoring of America MUST comply to this as part of a recent fine and settlement agreement they went into with the state of Utah or face further legal action.

What you need to do, and what Utah Investigator Ao Pauga will tell you to first do, and what was agreed upon between Utah and Mentoring of America, is call Mentoring of America's head of the resolution department in California. Her name is Karen Johnson and she is in California, not Utah. Tell her about the Telephone Fraud Prevention Act and that you would like a full refund. Also tell her that you know about the fines issued by Utah against Mentoring of America. If she tries to bully you or refuses, tell her that you will file a formal complaint with the Utah Division of Consumer Protection and Mr. Ao Pauga. She does NOT want you to do this. If your state laws allow, tape record the conversation with Karen Johnson and send the tape to Mr. Ao Pauga in Utah.

The direct line to Karen Johnson is:

1-818-464-1671

or

1-888-461-9029

Mentoring of America's most recent fine:

As of January 10, 2007 the Utah Division of Consumer Protection ("Division") and Mentoring of America, LLC, John Beck Amazing Profits, LLC and Jeff Paul ("Defendants") stipulated and agreed to the following:

1. Defendants shall pay a fine in the amount of $25,000.00 to the Division;

2. Defendants shall comply with the notice provisions relating to the three day right to cancel as required by law. Additionally, the Defendants shall clearly disclose the products and/or services represented in their sales presentations as well as the identity of the entity that will be providing these services;

3. Defendants shall work with the Division in resolving consumer complaints;

4. the Defendant has provided information and documents required in order to complete its application for a telemarketing permit;

5. Upon execution of this Stipulation, the Division shall issue a telemarketing permit to Mentoring of America;

6. Defendants shall comply with all of the requirements of the Utah Consumer Sales Practices Act, the Utah Telephone Fraud Prevention Act, and all other laws and rules administered by the Division;

7. The Settlement Agreement entered into between Mentoring of America and the Division shall remain in full force and effect except as modified by this Stipulation.
