I had the same problem with Merchants Credit Guide, I did however finally get this issue resolved. I wrote to Lisa Madigan, Attorney General , state of Illinois, where Merchant is located. It was promply resolved in writing.

The burden of proof is always on the collector to prove that you owe the debt, and is NEVER on you to prove that you don't.

Stay off the phone and always communicate in writing by certified mail return reciept requested. Be sure to put the certified# on the letter itself and keep a copy for your records.

By the means above, send a letter of dispute and request for debt validation. Clearly dispute the debt and DEMAND to see whatever you allegedly signed to create the debt and a full account history and itemization of charges. Also demand proof that they are legally entitled to collect said debt and proof that they are licensed to do so both in the state of their home office and in the state you reside in.

Now, under federal law, all collections activity must cease until they provide the requested validation.

Merchants Credit Guide company are JUNK DEBT BUYERS who pay far less than a penny on the dollar for debts of this age and type. Most are past SOL for legal collections and they know it.
