I had a custom garage built, about 8 yrs ago. When the first set of torsion springs broke, I called Metro Garage Door to replace them. Their set of springs broke at about 42 months ( 3 1/2 yrs). I called them and said "in my 35 yrs of home ownership I've never replaced a garage door spring".

I asked them what would be the problem that the spring has broken again in 3 1/2 yrs. They told me it was 'normal'. At that point I told them that I as a licensed engineer. They hung up, and never called back. Besides the spring breaking, it stripped the gears in my GDO - I had to buy $50 in replacement parts to fix it.

I went on the internet, and found a supplier of garage door springs. After finding out the weight of my door, I purchased 42" long springs.

The springs that Metro Garage door installed were 27". I now understand how they make a lot of money be installing marginal parts, and keep comming back, again and again for a simple repair that would last the life of the home.

Bottom line is that these GDO people have a racket, beware of it!

Doug:

As an engineer I would think you would be aware that a torsion spring has FOUR components to its specifications (length, inside diameter, wire size, wind) and without ALL FOUR specs it is imposable to tell if the spring was appropriate or not.

I do not know if the spring was appropriate or not but your report is based upon emotion rather than accurate information regarding the engineering of a torsion spring.

Three ans a half years sounds short to me but you simply do not have the information needed to make a fact based evaluation of the spring.

Here is the problem with most companys doing garage door repairs
Most of the people who own and operate know nothing of what they are doing
for simplicity here springs givin the same diameter wire a longer spring will lift less than a shorter spring but the longer spring will last longer than the shorter spring
this is a problem in minneapolis as well as elsewhere in the country

Response to Doug's complaint about our broken spring warranty

AUTHOR: Metro Garage Door Co. - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, August 07, 2007

I wish to respond to several comments made by -Doug- and clarify some facts about the breakage of garage door tension springs. Garage door springs do the lifting of the garage door and all of these springs will wear out due to use. When they wear out is determined by the cycles that the spring is designed for and the number of times the door opens and closes. The industry standard for typical residential torsion springs is 10,000 cycles. With a typical home owner useage the springs will break in about 4-7 years. This may occur earlier if the door is used more frequently or later if it is used infrequently. It is important for home owner to be aware that springs do wear out and will require replacement in time.

Most garage door companies offer a 4 to 5 year pro-rata warranty for the springs that they install for home owners. This usually covers the part and not the labor for replacing the part, much like a tire warranty.

The information about the replacement spring that he purchased is very misleading since the the length is only one factor in identifying the strength of the spring for his door. The wire size is also a key factor since larger wire springs which are shorter would have a same or greater strength. It is very likely that the earlier spring on his door had a larger diameter wire and thus would be shorter that the one he purchased.

The conclusion that Doug came to about our springs is completely false. The springs that we install have a 20,000 cycle design and at the time of his service we had a 5 year pro-rata part warranty. We have recently extended our warranty to cover labor and the part for five years. Unfortunately he didn't wish to talk with us long enough to find out that he had a pro-rata warranty on his springs and would have had some credit coming for his repacement spring had he wanted us to do the work. He also didn't leave his name or phone number so we couldn't call him back.We are sorry that he chose to go the route he did. Our goal is to solve home owner's garage door problems, not upset them.

Our company has an excellent reputation in our service to home owners since 1978 and we have received the top award from the largest home owner advocate organization here in the Twin Cities for the past 6 consecutive years.
